Chidambaram supports Omar's Kashmir peace efforts

New Delhi: Home Minister P. Chidambaram Tuesday said the central government would support Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in his efforts to end the cycle of violence in the state that has claimed eight lives in the last four days.

Chidambaram said instructions had been reiterated to central paramilitary forces to observe maximum restraint while dealing with rioters but added that the Central Reserve Police Forces (CRPF) personnel "had to use force in self-defence".

Court to frame charges in Babri Mosque demolition case

Lucknow: A special court hearing the Babri Mosque demolition case Tuesday ordered the then Faizabad district magistrate and some leaders of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to appear before it for framing of charges.

The VHP and the BJP leaders are facing charges of criminal conspiracy behind the Dec 6, 1992 demolition of the 16th century mosque.

Srinagar: Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Omar Abdullah has spoken for the first time after violence erupted in the Kashmir Valley. He said that anti-national forces and vested interests are together creating trouble.

He said that emotional and vulnerable youth are being exploited by the vested interests.

Terming the deaths of civilians as extremely unfortunate, he said that the current situation is not a simple law and order matter.

"Kashmir crisis not because of bad governance," said Omar.

Omar makes emotional appeal for peace in Kashmir

Srinagar, June 29 (IANS) Security forces shot dead three more Kashmiri youth Tuesday, taking the toll to eight in the last four days, sparking anger across the valley. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah made an emotional appeal for peace, asking parents to stop their children from throwing stones at the security forces.

Police said Imtiyaz Ahmad, 23, Ishtiyaq Ahmad, 20, and Sajjad-ul-Islam, 24, were killed and two others critically injured Tuesday afternoon when security forces opened fire at a mob that attacked them on Anantnag-Pahalgam road, some 50 km from here.

Two more killed in Anantga, violence spreads in Kashmir

Srinagar: Kashmir continues to remain tense with reports of violence in Anantnag where a curfew like situation has been imposed after two people were killed in fresh firing. Three others are reported to be seriously injured.

At least two youth were killed in CRPF firing here in Anantnag, south Kashmir on Tuesday, reports said.

With this the number of civilian deaths in the Valley in the last two weeks has gone up to 10.

Curfew clamped in Kashmir Valley

Srinagar: Curfew was Tuesday clamped in parts of the Kashmir Valley to end days of violence, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said, warning that curfew violators will be dealt with sternly.

As three more people were killed in firing by security forces, Abdullah appealed to everyone in Jammu and Kashmir to help restore normalcy in the state.

"Curfew is being imposed in various parts of the valley... areas under north Kashmir, some areas have come under curfew.

New Delhi: The Jamia Millia Islamia here Tuesday announced the results of entrance test and interviews of some of its courses.

The courses include Master of Business Administration (MBA) (full time), Bachelor of Business Studies (BBS), Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS), MA (Mass Communication) and MA (Convergent Journalism).

The short-listed students will have to submit their certificates at the time of final admission, a university statement said.


CBI custody for Mecca Masjid blast accused

Hyderabad: A local court Tuesday sent Lokesh Sharma, the second accused in the Mecca Masjid blast case, to 10 days Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) custody.

The 14th additional chief metropolitan magistrate passed the orders on a petition by CBI, which is probing the 2007 blast.

Sharma will be in CBI's custody from June 30 till July 9. Though CBI had sought his custody for 15 days, the court only agreed to 10 days.

Devender Gupta, the other accused in the case, is already in CBI custody till June 30.

Kochi : Sufiya Maudany, an accused in the 2005 Kalamessery bus burning case and wife of People's Democratic Party chief Abdul Nasir Maudany, Tuesday got relaxation in her bail conditions from a special National Investigation Agency court here.

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Thowheed Jamath (TNTJ) is going to organize a conference in Chennai on July 4 to demand the Central Government to provide 10% reservation for Muslims in education and employment as recommended by the Justice Ranganath Misra Commission.

TNTJ founder P. Jainulabdeen told the media that though the Congress-led UPA government has tabled the Justice Ranganath Misra Commission report in the Parliament, it is yet to table its Action Taken Report on the Commission's recommendations. Curfew imposed in Kashmir's Sopore, Baramulla

Srinagar: The Kashmir Valley continued to simmer Tuesday as violence spread to the southern region leaving one person injured in firing by security forces while curfew was clamped in many parts to quell angry protests over eight civilian killings.

Stone pelting mobs took to streets at many places in the summer capital Srinagar as protesters and police clashed in south Kashmir's Anantnag and Pulwama districts.

One person identified as Arshad Ahmad was injured when security forces fired a rubber bullet to quell protests in Mattan Chowk of Anantnag, 56 km from here.
