Srinagar police chief removed

Srinagar: Riyaz Bedar was Sunday removed as the police chief of this Jammu and Kashmir summer capital after the death of a young man in firing by security forces triggered angry protests in which some 30 people were injured.

The decision to replace Bedar with Syed Ashiq Bukhari was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to review the law and order situation in the city, official sources said. Bukhari was heading the police's counter-intelligence unit in Srinagar.

Man held for Aligarh admission racket

Aligarh: A private coaching centre employee was arrested here for his alleged involvement in a racket in which students were charged Rs.4-6 lakhs for admission to prestigious colleges, police said Sunday.

The accused, Ranjeet Kumar, who works for a Kanpur-based coaching centre, was caught by Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) officials, an AMU public relation officer (PRO) told IANS.

AMU teaching staff member dies in train near Bhopal

Bhopal: A senior member of the teaching staff of Aligarh Muslim University, (AMU), Aligarh, passed away in running train between Bina and Bhopal railway station on Saturday evening following a severe cardiac arrest.

Dr. Iqbal Sabir, a senior lecturer in the History Department of AMU, is survived by his wife and two minor children. He was 54 and a diabetic patient.

ISI has interest in some Kerala organisations: Minister

Thiruvananthapuram: Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) spy agency has an interest in certain sectors in Kerala and also in some organisations based in the state, Union Minister of State for Home Mulapally Ramachandran said Sunday.

Ramachandran disclosed this when asked if the home ministry was aware of some Kerala based organization in the Middle East having links with the ISI.

Srinagar on boil as youth killed in firing

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir's summer capital Srinagar was on the boil Sunday after security forces shot dead one more youth, triggering frenzied protests that left at least 20 people, including seven security personnel, injured in widespread clashes throughout the day.

Outnumbered police and paramilitary personnel used tear gas and batons as they struggled to keep at bay stone-pelting mobs that vented their fury during demonstrations sparked by the overnight death of another young man injured in a clash a week earlier.

The killing of the flotilla peace activists by Israelis has predictably brought howls of sanctimonious denunciations from the Muslim media in the Subcontinent, but why hasn't the killing of 90 Ahmedis in Lahore by Punjabi Taliban troubled their conscience?
This question is of particular interest to Muslims of India because they have been victims of lethal hatred in one state, and face discrimination all over the country in one form or another.

Bhopal panel meets for third day, discusses environmental issues

New Delhi : The ministerial panel on the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy met here for the third day Sunday to finalise deliberations on the areas that require attention for providing relief to people affected by the world's worst industrial disaster.

In Sunday's meeting, which was the fourth since Friday, the Group of Ministers (GoM), headed by Home Minister P. Chidambaram discussed environment related issues plaguing parts of the Madhya Pradesh capital since the Dec 2-3, 1984 toxic gas leak from the Union Carbide plant that killed and maimed thousands.

BJP flays Nitish Kumar over Gujarat aid money

Lucknow : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Sunday condemned Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for returning Rs.5 crore aid money to Gujarat, saying it shows "narrow-mindedness and petty politics".

"It is unfortunate. Nitish Kumar should accept his mistake," senior BJP leader Kalraj Mishra told reporters here.

He said by returning the aid money that Gujarat had given to Bihar for flood relief, Nitish Kumar had not only hurt the sentiments of the people in Bihar but also all Indians.

Delhi: If the Congress-led government decides to go ahead with the inclusion of caste in the census, it may be seen as a step against the advice of its own prominent past leaders, as two telling quotes from Rajiv Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru indicate.

Their quotes on caste and regionalism have appeared in the latest issue of the fortnightly journal, The Supreme Saviour. While Nehru talks of narrow conflicts in the name of religion, province, caste and language and the need for a classless and casteless society, Rajiv Gandhi's quote is more direct.

One killed in Srinagar violence

Srinagar : Tension gripped Srinagar Sunday after a man was killed in police firing at a mob which attacked a CRPF post protesting the death of another youth in earlier clashes, officials said.

Angry youth indulged in stone-pelting at security forces in various parts of the city and police resorted to firing in the air to quell the protests, the officials added.

Hundreds of people took out a procession, carrying the body of Javaid Ahmad Malla, the 26-year-old killed Sunday morning when a mob attacked a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) post in Noorbagh area of the city.

Injured youth dies in Srinagar hospital

Srinagar : A youth, allegedly beaten by the security forces during clashes in Srinagar June 12, died in the hospital late Saturday.

Muhammad Rafiq Bangroo, 26, was admitted to Sher-e-Kashmir Medical Institute Soura (SKIMS) last Saturday after allegedly being beaten by the security forces in Safa Kadal area of the city as protesters clashed with police after the death of class 12 student, Tufail Ahmad Mattoo.

Doctors had described Bangroo's condition as critical even though he had been put on life support system in the hospital.
