Another imposter caught at Jamia

New Delhi : An imposter who appeared as a candidate for the Bachelor of Technology programme of the Jamia Milia Islamia University was caught by varsity authorities during the selection interview Friday, a day after an impersonator was apprehended for similar reasons.

Gulam Ahamad Raza was appearing for the interview in place of Irshad, a B.Tech aspirant who has been accused of hiring him.

"They had settled on an amount of Rs.25,000 if the candidate was selected," a statement issued by varsity media coordinator Simi Malhotra said.

Centre amends OBC education quota law, Jamia’s fate still uncertain

Patna: To safeguard interests of the tribal population in North-Eastern states, the Union Cabinet yesterday approved amendments to the Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Act, 2006, exempting the region from the Act's binding 27% quota for OBCs. However, the fate of Jamia Millia Islamia in this regard is still uncertain.

Zakir Naik banned from entering Britain

London : Indian Muslim preacher Zakir Naik who claimed "every Muslim should be terrorist" has been banned from entering Britain, The Daily Telegraph reported Friday.

Naik, 44-year-old tele-evangelist, was due to deliver a series of lectures in Wembley Arena and Sheffield.

Britain's new Home Secretary Theresa May said she was banning Naik from entering the country as the "numerous comments" he made were evidence of his "unacceptable behaviour".

Court rejects ex-BJP legislator's plea in Gujarat riot case

Gandhinagar: The Gujarat High Court Thursday rejected the plea of former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator Prahlad Ghosha and another man challenging a lower court's order to consider them as accused in the Dipda Darwaza case in the 2002 post-Godhra riots.

Yusuf Khan Murad Khan and his 11 family members were attacked and killed by a mob at Dipda Darwaza area of Visnagar in Mehsana district. More than 24 people were injured in the attack.

Trial court told to decide on POTA confessions

Gandhinagar: The Gujarat High Court Thursday left it to the trial court to decide whether the confessional statements of an accused recorded under the defunct Prevention Of Terrorism Act (POTA) is admissible as evidence or not.

Justice Anant Dave, while hearing a petition of an accused in the 2002 Godhra train carnage case, said that the trial judge, while passing the order, should decide whether or not the confessional statements of the accused are admissible as evidence with reasoning.

Gujarat gets time to file report in court on riots case

Gandhinagar: The government Thursday got a week's time from the Gujarat High Court to find out the status of the process for summoning Chief Minister Narendra Modi initiated by a panel probing the 2002 post-Godhra riots case.

This is the third adjournment after the state earlier sought time to file a status report on the Justices (retired) G.T. Nanavati-Akshay Mehta Enquiry Commission probing the riots case.

Two blast accused brought to Hyderabad

Hyderabad: Two activists of a Hindu terror group accused in the October 2007 blast in the Ajmer Sharif dargah were Thursday brought here by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for questioning in the Mecca Masjid bombing in May the same year.

Devender Gupta and Lokesh Sharma, both members of Hindutva terror group Abhinav Bharat, were produced before a court, which sent them to judicial custody for two weeks.

CBI sources said the two were later shifted to Chanchalguda Central Jail amid tight security.
