New Delhi: Only about 500 insurgents, about 40 percent of them foreign militants, are still active in Jammu and Kashmir and peace is not far from the troubled state with a steep drop in violence in the last three years, says J&K state police Chief Kuldeep Khoda.

"There are about 500 militants presently active in Jammu and Kashmir and their number has come down from 700-800 last year and around 1,000 in 2008," Khoda said in Delhi where he had come for an official function.

After three days of shutdown, life back to normal in Kashmir

Srinagar: Life returned to normal in Srinagar and other parts of the Kashmir Valley Tuesday following three days of separatist shutdowns.

All Parties Hurriyat Conference (G) Chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani had in a statement Monday evening asked people to resume normal activities from Tuesday.

Commercial and other activities remained paralysed in Saida Kadal for the fourth day today though there was no strike call from any organisation.

Abdul Samad to be released tomorow

Mumbai: A Mumbai Sessions Court on Tuesday granted bail to Pune blast suspect Abdul Samad on a surety of Rs 25,000.

The Pune court has asked Samad to give his address and mobile phone details to the investigating officer. He has also been told that he cannot leave the country without the court's permission. His passport has to be deposited with the investigating officer.

Muslim League wants PM to streamline Haj pilgrimage

New Delhi : Upset over the delay in organising this year's Haj pilgrimage, which saw 160,000 pilgrims from India visiting the holy city of Mecca last year, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) is seeking the intervention of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

IUML leader E.T. Mohammed Basheer, MP, said: "The time for organising the Haj pilgrimage is running out," and added that it should have begun a month ago.

Mumbai: Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray was yesterday presented a copy of Marathi version of Quran as birthday gift on his 43rd birth anniversary. A delegation of reportedly Ulema and leaders of Muslim organizations visited Raj's home, wished him on his birthday and presented him with the Quran.

Under the leadership of MNS vice president Haji Arafat, a delegation of Ulema and leaders of Muslim groups visited Raj's home and presented Quran, says a Mumbai Urdu daily Inquilab news report.

Kashmir back to normal after three days of shutdown

Srinagar : Schools reopened as did markets, banks and other business establishments in Srinagar and other parts of the Kashmir Valley Tuesday following three days of separatist shutdowns.

City roads once again returned to life with most main roads clogged with traffic. The Kashmir University, however, postponed all examinations scheduled for Tuesday.

Senior separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani had in a statement Monday evening asked people to resume normal activities from Tuesday.

Study in coastal Karnataka finds Muslims at higher risk for diabetes

A study published in the latest issue of an international journal suggests that Muslims living in coastal Karnataka are at a higher risk of developing diabetes.

The study conducted by a team of Kasturba Medical College, Manipal and published in International Journal of Diabetes in Developing Countries surveyed people living in coastal Karnataka to estimate the prevalence of diabetes among adults aged 30 years and above.
