Patna: Highly Muslim dominated Malda and Murshidabad districts in West Bengal could elect only 31 Muslims together in 146 wards that went to poll on May 30. The results of 81 municipalities of West Bengal were announced today. Trinamool Congress has won 33 municipalities while the Left Front only 18. Congress got only 7.

New Delhi : Effecting top-level changes in its faction-ridden Bihar unit before assembly polls this year, the Congress Wednesday named Mehboob Ali Kaiser as the new state party chief.

Kaiser, secretary of the All India Congress Committee, has been appointed president of the Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee in place of Anil Kumar Sharma, Congress general secretary Janardan Dwivedi said in a statement.

Kolkata : Even as the Trinamool Congress swept the Kolkata municipal polls, one of its star candidates, Rukbanur Rahman - brother of Rizwanur whose mysterious death shocked the city - was defeated.

Javed Khan, a Trinamool legislator and one of the party's mayoral candidates, also lost to a lesser known candidate.

Rukbanur, in the forefront of the campaign to bring to justice those responsible for the 30-year-old computer graphics teacher's death, lost to Revolutionary Socialist Party's Sushil Kumar Sharma.

Recommendation for more plus two seats in Malabar

Thiruvananthapuram: The Left Democratic Front yesterday recommended to the government to allot more seats and schools for plus two in the Malabar area. The recommendation was made after a meeting of the LDF, considering the unavailability of higher education options in relation with the increase in the success percentage of the SSLC (10th standard). The meeting requested the government to allot more batches of plus one in the existing schools, said Vaikom Visvan, the LDF Convener.

66-year-old Jabbar Husen fails in Class 10 boards for 45th time

Lucknow : It was 45th time unlucky for 66-year-old Jabbar Husen from an Uttar Pradesh village who has failed his Class 10 exams again this year -- but the never-say-die grocer is determined try and try again till he succeeds in clearing the exam.

Husen, who owns a grocery store in Fatehpur district's Bindki village, about 200 km from here, could not clear three of the six papers in Class 10. Results of the Class 10 Uttar Pradesh board were announced Tuesday.

AMU Vice Chancellor Prof. PK Abdul Azis's claim that "setting up of five Centers across the nation will transform the fate of excluded minority from development deficit to a life of dignified existence" does not seem very well-founded. In order to expect a great deal from these satellite campuses on behalf of the marginalized Muslim community one first needs to know the nature of those campuses.
