SIO campaign for Muslim reservation concludes

Kolkata: The 10-day statewide campaign of West Bengal Students Islamic Organization of India to press for Muslim reservation ended yesterday after holding a rally and convention in Central Kolkata. The youth group demanded immediate implementation of Ranganath Misra Commission recommendations.

All India Imams’ Council holds camp for madrasa syllabus

Bangalore: All India Imams' Council held a program in Bangalore to discuss changes in madrasa syllabus. The program stressed the introduction of regional languages, science and other subject in the curriculum of madrasas. The Council formed two years ago claims to have support of Imams of Masjids, madrasa teachers and students.

The Council has been working with the motive "Imam for Social Change".

Other issues discussed at the program were legal awareness and use of media for the community empowerment.

Protesting death sentence, stone-throwers kill an innocent

Srinagar: Shafiq Ahmad Sheikh had nothing to do with the protesters who were throwing stones at the bus in which he was travelling in Srinagar. A stone hit Sheikh on his head and he died later on Friday.

As per reports, the unfortunate incident took place at Batamaloo, when a mob, protesting the death sentence given to two Kashmiris in Delhi's Lajpat Nagar blast case, attacked a mini bus and pelted stones.

Patna: Justice for victims of communal violence is slow and often ineffective in India, thereby perpetuating a climate of impunity, says the Annual Report of the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom for the year 2010. The US bipartisan group has urged the U.S. government "to encourage and assist the government of India to undertake measures to make more vigorous and effective efforts to halt violent attacks against members of religious minorities."

Civilian dies as separatists protest in Srinagar

Srinagar : A 40-year-old man died Friday after supporters of hardline senior separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani stoned a vehicle in which he was travelling even as the protesters, shouting anti-India slogans, tried to take out a march in this Jammu and Kashmir capital, police said.

Shafiq Ahmad Sheikh, a peon in the secondary school board, was killed after the public transport vehicle he was travelling in was attacked by stone pelters in the Batmaloo locality here.

Hindu extremist group member arrested in Ajmer blast case

Ajmer: The Rajasthan Anti-Terror Squad (ATS) have picked up a person named Devendra Gupta in connection with the Ajmer Dargah blast in which two persons were killed in October 2007. Gupta, who is affiliated to a Hindu extremist group and has connections with Malegaon blast accused Pragya Singh Thakur, was arrested from Ajmer's Bihariganj area for his alleged involvement in the Dargah blast.

Batla House case charge-sheet filed in Delhi court

New Delhi: The Delhi Police filed charge-sheet in the controversial Batla House encounter case in the Patiala House court here on April 29. The charge-sheet relied heavily on police officers' accounts. There is no independent witness. Shahzad Ahmed @ Pappu, who was picked from his home in Azamgarh this February, has been charged with murder of Inspector Mohan Chand Sharma. The weapon, however, has not been traced.

AMU to revive Hyderabad as test center

Aligarh: The Aligarh Muslim University has decided to revive Hyderabad as Test Center for MBBS/BDS only. The test will be held on May 8, 2010 at Aligarh, Bhopal, Kolkata, Kozhikode, Lucknow and Hyderabad.

Earlier the Test Center at Hyderabad for B.Tech. and MBBS was dropped due to disturbance there, on Telangana issue.

Aligarh: A dedicated website on the life and works of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan was launched today at Aligarh Muslim University. The website, designed by Dr. Masarrat Ali, an AMU alumnus in US, is said to be the first and largest digitization work in India dedicated to any person or institution. The website http://www.sirsyedtoday.org/ has more than one lakh ten thousand pages of historical documents related to Sir Syed, MAO College and AMU history.
