Kashmir limps back to normalcy

Srinagar: Life in Kashmir valley returned to normal on Wednesday after two days of a separatist-sponsored strike to protest the death of a teenager in police firing.

All Parties Hurriyat Conference (G) Chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani had in a statement Tuesday evening asked people to resume normal activities from Wednesday.

New Delhi : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Wednesday said President Pratibha Patil should reject the mercy petition of parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.

"If the home ministry report is true, we demand immediate implementation of the Supreme Court verdict. We demand that president's office reject the mercy petition of Afzal Guru. Book on Karkare killing set to release in Marathi

Pune : Author S.M. Mushrif is all set to release the Marathi edition of his book "Who Killed Karkare? - The Real face of Terrorism in India", here June 26.

"We have already released the book in five languages - English, Urdu, Malayalam, Kannada and Tamil. There was a heavy demand by Marathi readers and hence the release," said Mushrif.

The book focuses on unearthing the conspiracy behind the murder of Hemant Karkare, a Maharashtrian and former Mumbai ATS chief slain in the 26/11 terror attacks.

New Delhi : The University Grants Commission National Eligibility test (UGC-NET) will be conducted by Jamia Millia Islamia University here Sunday.

UGC-NET exams are conducted for the appointment of teachers in colleges and universities across the nation. Junior Research Fellowships are also awarded to students through this exam.

According to Jamia officials, nearly 24,000 candidates will be taking the exam at 42 examination centers.

New Delhi/Sopore : "We've left it to Allah!" was the reaction of the distraught family of parliament attack convict Afzal Guru as the government is yet to take a final decision on his mercy plea pending with the president for four years.

A top source in the government said that Guru's file was still with Home Minister P. Chidambaram and has not been returned to the Rashtrapati Bhawan, denying earlier reports that the home ministry had rejected his mercy and recommended he be hanged.

Shiv Sena slams government's minority policy

Mumbai : The Shiv Sena Wednesday denounced the central government's efforts to provide more government jobs to minorities, saying it amounted to an "Islamisation" of India.

In a scathing editorial in its mouthpiece Saamna, the Sena said that there had been a large increase in the number of government jobs given to Muslims.

Basing its argument on figures released by the central government, it said that more and more Muslims were being employed in railways and public sector banks.
