Modi wasting Gujarat money on Bihar ads: Congress

Gandhinagar: Leader of Opposition in the Gujarat assembly Shaktisinh Gohil Saturday accused Chief Minister Narendra Modi of wasting crores of rupees of public money by placing advertisements in Bihar's newspapers to coincide with his visit to the state.

"He has no right to spend crores of rupees of the people of the state during his political visit to Bihar," Gohil said in a statement issued here Saturday.

'Slumdog..' stars Rubina, Azhar to act in Hollywood movie

Mumbai: Nearly two years after "Slumdog Millionaire" created history at the Oscars, child actors from a Mumbai slum Azharuddin Mohammed Shaikh and Rubina Ali Qureshi have been signed for a Hollywood movie. They will each be paid 1,000 pounds per day for 20-25 days of shooting, their contract says.

The movie, "Lord Owen's Lady", is being produced by Dragons Productions (Wales) Ltd, based in London and Cardiff, Rubina's publicist and agent Dinesh Dubey said.

Man arrested for hoax bomb call

New Delhi: A 25-year-old man was arrested Saturday for making a call to the police saying a bomb had been planted at the Jama Masjid here.

According to police, Chatur Singh alias Lal called up police control room at 7.55 p.m. Tuesday and said that a bomb would blow up the Jama Masjid in half-an-hour.

"The call created a panic-like situation in the locality. But after a thorough checking, we concluded it was a hoax call," a police officer said.

The accused was arrested from a slum in Inderlok. Singh told police that he made the call in jest.

Shibli National College criticises Modi government over photo ad

Lucknow: A college in Uttar Pradesh's Azamgarh district Saturday criticized the Gujarat government for using without persmission a photograph of its girl students in newspaper advertisements projecting Narendra Modi's pro-Muslim face.

The college is contemplating legal action against the Gujarat officials and the advertising agency.

Child star Rubina still in slum, but Marathi autobiography ready

Mumbai: Rubina Ali Qureshi, the little girl from a Mumbai slum who shot to stardom with the Oscar winning "Slumdog Millionaire", is set to release the Marathi version of her autobiography even as she continues to live in the same squalid surroundings feeling "unsafe and insecure".

The book, titled "Majha Taryankade Pravas", has been translated from an English version, "Slumgirl Dreaming", by Mumbai author Maitreyi Joshi and published by Mehta Publishing House, Pune.

Restrictions in Srinagar after youth's death

Srinagar : Angry youths clashed with security forces here in Jammu and Kashmir Saturday following the death of a teenager they allege was killed in a street protest a day earlier.

The young men hurled stones at police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in several areas including Narwara, Rainawari, Nawa Kadal, Bimina, Batmaloo, Sonawar, Natipora, Abi Guzar and Hari Singh High Street.

Police used batons and tear gas to disperse the mobs, which would repeatedly run into the narrow streets and reappear to again attack the security personnel.

Student killed during Srinagar protests

Srinagar : A Class 12 student was killed during violent protests in the old city area of Srinagar Friday afternoon.

Tufail Ahmad Matoo, 19, died in Rajouri Kadal area where clashes between stone pelting youths and the security forces broke out after Friday prayers.

Police asserted the youth was not killed due to firing by the security forces.

"He had been hit on the head by some hard substance and visibly there was no bullet injury that would definitely have left a burn mark besides an entry and exit wound," a senior police officer said.

Can Gates of ijtihad be closed?

After the fatwa from Deoband (some of the Deobandis deny that fatwa was ever issued) that Muslim women cannot work with strangers from amongst the men and that in that case her earnings will be haram (prohibited) to her family, a debate is raging on the need for ijtihad (creative reinterpretation of law) and it is often suggested that gates of ijtihad were closed after sack of Baghdad in 1258 and that these gates be reopened.
