Murderers have become bold. They are killing their own family members and loved ones in broad daylight, without any remorse and knowing fully well that no law or law-maker will dare touch them. The Khap Panchayats are in news yet again. And they are not the only ones we have to blame. Honour Killing is spreading fast. Killing is becoming so common in our civilised society, which is more often represented by a so called "urban India', a "shining India" and such other fantastic and well-coined phrases.

Kashmir schools, colleges to remain shut for two days

Srinagar: All colleges and schools in the Kashmiy Valley will remain closed Monday and Tuesday as a precautionary measure due to a call by separatists for a students' protest against alleged human rights violations in the state, an official statement said Sunday.

The hardline separatist Hurriyat group headed by Syed Ali Geelani had called for Valley-wide protests by students on Monday and Tuesday.

An official statement said: "All the colleges and schools in the Valley would remain closed on Monday and Tuesday on the demands of the parents and as a precautionary measure."

JK police seeks custody of army colonel, major in Machil fake encounter case

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir police has sought the custody of an army colonel, a major and four others for custodial interrogation in the alleged fake encounter of three youths in Machil sector in frontier district of Kupwara in April this year.

Sources in the state home department said a letter had been sent to the local army headquarter for handing over colonel DK Pathania, Major Upinder and four others for their detailed custodial interrogation.

Family of Firdous Ahmad Kakroo demand justice

Srinagar: The family members of a youth, Firdous Ahmad Kakroo, who was allegedly killed in the CRPF firing in town on Friday, have demanded the authorities to bring the guilty to justice.

Nazir Ahmad Khan, father of the deceased, said that Firdous along with some friends had just finished loading a truck in the locality to earn some quick bucks. "On his return to home, I asked him to go to paddy fields to irrigate them. Firdous obliged.
But within 15 minutes he was shot dead by the paramilitary forces," Nazir said with tears in his eyes.

Srinagar: Curfew continued to remain imposed in Sopore town, of north Kashmir on Sunday, for the third consecutive day. Heavy contingents of police and paramilitary troopers had been deployed in various localities of the town and the armoured vehicles and troopers were seen patrolling the deserted streets. Protest strike was observed in Baramulla town, as well.

Dr. Javaid Rahi to get Sardar Patel Medal

Jammu: Gujjar activist of Jammu and Kashmir and writer of Gojri language, Dr Javaid Rahi has been chosen for the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Medal for the year 2010 by Ahmedabad based All India Society of Kashatriya Gujjars. He is first among Muslim Gujjars of J& K to get this prize for his outstanding contributions towards development of Gojri language and Gujjar identity in South Asia.
