Government to implement more minority welfare schemes

New Delhi : The central government Wednesday said it would implement four more schemes for the welfare of minorities this financial year after an allocation of Rs.11 crore was made in the budget of 2010-11 for the new plans.

These include strengthening of the state waqf boards, interest subsidy on educational loans for overseas studies, promotional activities for linguistic minorities, and a scheme for containing population decline of small minority community.

Waqf boards are panels that look after Muslim property.

Aligarh university ties up with American varsity

Lucknow : The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Wednesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the University of North Carolina (UNC) in the US for research and academic exchange, an official said.

"The agreement aims to promote exchange of information and material that are of mutual interest of the two premier institutions. The MoU would facilitate exchange of academic, administrative, research staff and visits of scholars and students," AMU's assistant public relations officer Zeeshan Ahmad told reporters in Aligarh, some 300 km from Lucknow.

AMU Academic Council approves courses for Malappuram centres

Aligarh: Within 48 hours after the Kerala High Court stayed admissions for a month at Aligarh Muslim University's Malappuram centre, the AMU Academic Council, in a special meeting today, approved the recommendations for starting BALLB and MBA courses at the Centres of Murshidabad (West Bengal) and Malappuram (Kerala) for the Session 2010-2011.

The courses were recommended by the Board of Studies of the Department of Law and Department of Business Administration respectively.

Minority Ministry to launch 4 new schemes

New Delhi: The Ministry of Minority Affairs will be implementing four new schemes for the welfare of Minorities during the current financial year 2010-11. They include strengthening of State Waqf Boards and Interest subsidy on educational loans for overseas studies for minority students.

A budgetary provision of Rs. 11 crore has been made in the budget of 2010-11 for the new schemes. Other two schemes are Promotional activities for Linguistic Minorities and scheme for containing population decline of small minority community.

Madhya Pradesh to appeal against Bhopal verdict

Bhopal : Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said Wednesday that the government will file an appeal in the high court seeking enhancement of the punishment awarded to seven convicts in the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy.

A five-member committee of legal experts is being constituted to study the verdict before going in for the appeal, he told reporters.

"Since the verdict is disappointing, we have decided to file an appeal to get justice for the victims and to get the sentence of the convicts increased," Chouhan said.

Patna: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi will be the state guest of Bihar when he will be visiting the state capital Patna to attend the Bharatiya Janata Party national executive meeting to be held on June 12 and 13. Bihar CM Nitish Kumar's decision may be seen as a shift in his thinking though he has always tried to distance himself from Modi.

While Nitish says the BJP executive meeting is their "internal affair" he has decided to accord the status of state guest to Modi along with L K Advani.

Kozhikode: All expatriates should be included in the census of population, demanded the Popular Front of India. The list of houses and the National Population Register (NPR) will be made this year and collecting details from every house will take place in February 2011. The NPR is the base for Unified Identity Card (UID) which is an indirect method of proving citizenship. The current situation is that the expatriates who left the country to make a living are risking their very citizenships.

Hyderabad: As part of its exercise to hear all stakeholders of Telangana, the Central government-formed Srikrishna Committee yesterday heard the Muslim Forum for Telangana. Responding to the Committee's main question about benefit to the Muslim community if Telangana is formed, the Forum submitted a detailed report.

The Forum said that as Muslims' population will higher in Telangana as compared to that in present Andhra, the community will benefit in every field.
