Be cautious in Kashmir, political parties to security forces

New Delhi: The Congress Monday led political parties in demanding that the security forces in Jammu and Kashmir exercise caution to prevent civilians from coming under fire, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said it will wait for an inquiry report before reacting to the recent deaths of civilians in the state.

Replying to queries from media persons, Congress spokesman Manish Tewari said the elected government in the state was doing its best to restore normalcy.

Kashmir killings: CRPF given clean chit

New Delhi: Giving a clean chit to the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), the central government Monday said "unruly mobs" were behind the violence in the Kashmir Valley and asserted that the government would not cow down to the separatists' tactics.

Union Home Secretary G.K. Pillai told CNN-IBN news channel that the separatists were instigating violence in the Valley as the overall law and order situation in the state was improving.

He said the CRPF reacted when they were attacked.

"CRPF has been extremely restrained," Pillai said.

Two dead as mobs run amok in Sopore, Baramulla, Srinagar

Srinagar: Two persons were killed and more than three dozen protesters and security men injured in widespread violence in Srinagar and north Kashmir Baramulla districts Monday. The trouble erupted as thousands of protestors were prevented from reaching Sopore to attend the funeral of two men killed last week, police said.

One protester, identified as Tajamul Ahmad Bhat of Wadoora (Sopore) was killed and six other protesters were injured when an angry mob defied curfew in north Kashmir's Sopore town Monday morning.

New Delhi: In a major development towards nabbing the real culprits, the central government is considering a combined probe into all major bomb blasts happened in last few years at different places in the country and are believed to have been carried out by Hindu radical groups.

The role of Hindu extremist organizations – Abhinav Bharat and Sanatan Sansthan – has been exposed in blasts at Hyderabad's Mecca Masjid, Ajmer Dargah and Malegaon. Some of the members of these two outfits have been detained by investigative agencies.

Srinagar : Two youths were killed as security forces opened fire on agitated mobs indulging in heavy stone pelting in Jammu and Kashmir's Baramulla and Sopore districts, police said

According to police, Tariq Ahmed Rather, 20, was killed at Delina locality outside Baramulla town Monday afternoon when a mob proceeding towards Sopore was intercepted by Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the state police.

Kollam: The Oscar Academy has selected Resul Pookutty as one of its voting members. Pookutty, who received the Oscar for sound mixing last year for the Danny Boyle film 'Slumdog Millionaire', is the third Indian to have selected to the position.

Pookutty was selected as one among the 135 voting members, all of whom are executives and film professionals, in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science. Pookutty has reportedly expressed his pleasure at having been given the voting right to select films for the Oscars.

Separatist leaders detained in Kashmir

Srinagar: Many separatist leaders, including Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, were detained Monday in summer capital Srinagar to thwart the proposed separatist march to Jammu and Kashmir's Sopore town where a youth was killed in firing Sunday.

Farooq was placed under house arrest in his uptown Nigeen residence where pro-independence Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front chairman Yaseen Malik was also detained, an official source said.

Senior Shia leader Aga Syed Hassan was also detained in his house in Central Badgam district.
