Madhya Pradesh judicial panel to inquire into Bhopal gas tragedy

Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government Wednesday decided to set up a judicial commission to inquire into the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy, with the focus on probing the release on bail of Warren Anderson, the then chief of Union Carbide.

"A retired high court judge is to be appointed for one-member enquiry commission to probe into circumstances of Bhopal gas tragedy. The commission will focus on reason of the release of Anderson," Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan told reporters.

Curfew-bound Kashmir towns 'peaceful but tense'

Srinagar: Several towns in Jammu and Kashmir remained curfew-bound Wednesday to curb widespread violence witnessed in the past few days. The authorities said the law order situation was "peaceful but tense", though mobs did pelt stones at security forces at several places in north Kashmir.

An indefinite curfew remained in force in seven areas of summer capital Srinagar, in north Kashmir's Sopore and Baramulla towns and in Anantnag, Pulwama and Kulgam towns of south Kashmir. Eight youth have been killed in firing by the security forces in the last four days.

Amaranth Yatra commences under tight security

Jammu: With the Amarnath Yatra set to start on Thursday amid turmoil in the Kashmir Valley, authorities say foolproof arrangements are in place to protect the tens of thousands of pilgrims.

Amidst tense situation due to the curfew imposed in the Valley, the annual Amarnath Yatra today began under tight security cover with the first batch of 1,272 pilgrims leaving Jammu base camp for the cave shrine, located at 3,338 metre altitude, in south Kashmir Himalayas.

Srinagar: The Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Wednesday said the protests in Kashmir had nothing to do with the Amarnath Yatra and that the amalgam wanted the pilgrimage to pass off successfully.

"Our protests are against the human rights violations and increased killing of youths in Kashmir. We are not aiming anyone," chairman of the faction Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said.

"We want the yatra to pass off successfully," Mirwaiz, who is under house arrest, said in a statement.

Court orders relief for Gujarat riot victims

Gandhinagar: The Gujarat High Court Wednesday directed the central and the state governments to take a decision to release compensation for a group of 2002 riot victims which has not received any relief yet.

The court also directed the state government to sympathetically consider pleas for jobs made by the next of kin of government employees killed in the riots.

The court was acting on a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by activist Gagan Sethi, seeking compensation for the 2002 riot victims.

Judicial custody of Mecca Masjid blast accused extended

Hyderabad: A city court Wednesday extended the judicial custody of one of the two accused in the Mecca Masjid blast case by 10 days.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is probing 2007 blast, produced Devender Gupta in the court after his CBI custody ended.

On a petition by the CBI, the 14th Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate extended Gupta's remand.

The accused was later shifted to Cherlapally jail on the city's outskirts as he was reportedly facing threat to his life from some inmates in Chanchalguda jail.

Patna: Seventy-five-year-old Baburao Chandawar, a close associate of Loknayak Jayprakash Narayan, is on an indefinite hunger strike here for more than one lakh Bhoodan kisans – the farmers given land by the government following the Bhoodan movement, but could not get possession of the land yet.

For last five years Baburao Chandawar in association with Bihar Sarvodaya Mandal has devoted himself in the campaign to hand over lands to the real owners. Nothing substantial could be done as yet in this connection.

Bihar to give funds to 2,700 unaided madrassas

Patna : Ignoring alliance partner Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) strong reservation on promoting madrassas in Bihar, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has decided to provide financial support to 2,700 unaided Islamic seminaries.

The 2,700 madrassas are affiliated to the Bihar State Madrasa Education Board but have not been getting any financial aid from the government till now.

Human Resource Development Principal Secretary Anjani Kumar Singh told IANS over telephone Wednesday that the state government has decided to provide financial aid to 2,700 madrassas.

Aligarh: Prof. Mukhtaruddin Ahmad Arzoo, a noted scholar and former Dean, Faculty of Arts, Aligarh Muslim University, died here today. He was 86. Born on November 14, 1924 in Patna, he did his D. Phil in 1958 from Oxford University under the guidance of Prof. Hamilton A. R. Gibb.

Dr. Arzoo, appointed as lecturer in the Department of Arabic at AMU in 1953, became Reader in Islamic Studies and in 1968 he became Professor and Chairman in the Department of Arabic and Dean, Faculty of Arts in 1975.

Indefinite curfew in south Kashmir after mob violence

Srinagar : An indefinite curfew was imposed Wednesday in south Kashmir towns of Anantnag, Kulgam and Pulwama while it continued without any relaxation for the fifth day in north Kashmir's Sopore town and for the second day in Old City areas here to curb widespread violence.

Following the deaths of three teenagers in Anantnag town Tuesday, violence had broken out there with mobs burning vehicles inside a state road transport yard and a petrol pump, besides setting fire to a police post and many shops.
