British awards' nominations begin

London: The 2010 Rory Peck Awards, sponsored by Sony Professional, has opened for nominations to honour global excellence in freelance news and current affairs camerawork.

These are the only awards dedicated to the work of professional freelance camerapersons and welcome entries from all over the world.

The London-based Rory Peck Trust was established in 1995, two years after Northern Irish freelance cameraman Rory Peck was killed while reporting on the siege of the Moscow White House in 1993.

The West precisely Britain has been campaigning for its humane values over the world for centuries. As 'Rome was not built in a day', the ideals that the United Kingdom earned as champion of freedom of speech and expression, for some, were also not established in a day or year. Without going by the liking or disliking of people in the East some Western countries including the UK have stood by and openly supported controversial people like Salman Rushdie and Taslima Nasreen in the recent past on grounds not other than freedom of expression.

Bihar Police team sent to Gujarat to probe ad issue

Patna: A Bihar Police team has been sent to Gujarat's Surat city to probe who sanctioned full page advertisements in vernacular dailies here bearing a photograph of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar with his Gujarat counterpart Narendra Modi, an official said Tuesday.

The advertisements triggered a controversy between ruling allies, the Janata Dal-United and the Bharatiya Janata Party after Nitish Kumar objected to the use of his photo without his permission.

Additional Director General of Police P.K Thakur said that a police team was sent to Surat to investigate.

Empower minorities commission: IUML urges PM

New Delhi : The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) Tuesday urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to provide statutory powers to the National Minorities Commission and hoped that a bill on this would soon get parliament's nod.

"The bill proposing amendments to empower the commission with statutory powers is still pending in parliament. It is imperative on the part of the government to give top priority for this bill to be adopted," the IUML said in a memorandum submitted to the prime minister here at a meeting here.

Restrictions, separatist strike hit life in Srinagar

Srinagar, June 22 (IANS) The overall law and order situation in Srinagar and other major towns of the Kashmir Valley remained peaceful Tuesday even as the official restrictions and a separatist shutdown threw life out of gear here.

An undeclared curfew was strictly enforced by the security forces in old city areas of Srinagar falling under Rainawari, Khanyar, Nowhatta, M.R. Gunj and Safa Kadal police stations.

In the uptown city areas, tension was reported in the Maisuma area while very little private transport was seen in the civil lines area of the city.

Tamil Nadu Waqf Board plans to set up AMU centre in the state

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Waqf Board is planning to set up a branch of the Aligarh Muslim University in the state, according to reports. The Board has reportedly written to the centre asking its permission for the same as 250 acres of land has been identified in Tiruchirappally for the AMU centre. Waqf Board chairman Kaviko Abdul Rahman expressed his hope that the government would make a positive response.
