Stray violence in Srinagar, life crippled across Kashmir

Srinagar: Stray incidents of violence were reported from Srinagar Monday as a separatist shutdown and strict restrictions by the authorities crippled life in the city and across the Kashmir Valley, a day after protests over a man's death sparked widespread street clashes.

Stone-pelting youth clashed with the police and the paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) at Nishat, Buchpora, Safa Kadal and Chattabal areas of the city.

Bhopal panel moots enhanced relief package, Anderson's extradition

New Delhi: The ministerial panel on the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy has recommended that the government press for former Union Carbide chief Warren Anderson's extradition from the US and set aside Rs.1,500 crore as relief package for those affected by the world's worst industrial disaster.

Special cabinet meet to consider Bhopal panel recommendations

New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will hold a special meeting of the union cabinet Friday that will consider the recommendations of the ministerial panel on the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy, Home Minister P. Chidambaram said Monday.

Chidambaram, who heads the Group of Ministers (GoM) on the Bhopal disaster, said the panel has made "significant recommendations" including the extradition of Warren Anderson, who was Union Carbide boss in 1984 when the toxic gas leak from its pesticide plant killed and maimed thousands.

Nepal bans school book after Muslim outcry

Kathmandu: The Nepal government Monday banned a school textbook after growing outcry by Muslims over an "objectionable" illustration depicting Prophet Mohammed as a woman-like figure and containing "erroneous interpretations" of Islam.

This is the first time in Nepal, which has enjoyed religious harmony despite being a Hindu kingdom till 2006, that the government has banned a book after protests by Muslims.

Bhopal panel to submit report Monday

New Delhi: The ministerial panel on the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy is due to submit its report to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh later Monday with key recommendations on addressing the wrongs in the 25-year-old disaster that killed thousands.

The Group of Ministers (GoM), led by Home Minister P. Chidambaram, met for four sessions since Friday to deliberate on the areas that require attention for providing relief to people affected by the world's worst industrial disaster. The panel met early Monday to finalise the minutes.

Agra: Despite the heat wave that has sent day temperatures soaring to 40-45 degrees Celsius, there is no marked drop in the tourist inflow into the Taj city.

Restrictions, shutdown cripple Srinagar

Srinagar: A separatist shutdown and strict curfew-like restrictions by authorities crippled Srinagar Monday, a day after protests over a man's death sparked widespread street clashes.

Restrictions on people's movement were imposed in five police station areas of Srinagar's Old City, where unrest throughout Sunday brought the Jammu and Kashmir summer capital to the boil.

Police said no traffic or pedestrian movement was allowed in Rainawari, Nowhatta, M.R. Gunj, Khanyar and Safa Kadal areas.
