Mohsina Kidwai elected unopposed to Rajya Sabha

Raipur : Senior Congress leader Mohsina Kidwai and Bharatiya Janata Party's tribal leader Nand Kumar Sai were Thursday re-elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Chhattisgarh.

Both the leaders were re-nominated by their parties from the mineral rich state that had two vacancies for the upper house of parliament.

Devenedra Verma, the returning officer and secretary to the Chhattisgarh assembly, declared them elected unopposed on the last day of withdrawal of papaers.

NHRC seeks report from Centre on Shopian killing

New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought a detailed report from the Centre on a complaint alleging that security forces killed a civilian in a "fake encounter" and also fired at protesters in south Kashmir's Shopian town recently.

Issuing notice to the Defence Secretary, the NHRC asked the government to submit the report of a magisterial inquiry into the incident along with the post-mortem and inquests report within ten weeks.

But the photo that the ad carries to prove the point has just been lifted from Internet. The photo of Muslim girls learning computer is not from Gujarat, rather Azamgarh.

Centre to strengthen state waqf boards

New Delhi: In the current fiscal of 2010-11 the Central Government will spend Rs 7 crore on a scheme to strengthen state waqf boards in pursuance of the recommendation of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on Waqf. Altogether 15 state waqf boards will be covered under this scheme.

New Delhi : Upping the ante on the Bhopal verdict, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Thursday demanded that the Congress seek forgiveness for helping Union Carbide chief Warren Anderson flee India and the government show "political will" to get him extradited from the US.

BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said the "responsibility for the disappointing court verdict in the Bhopal gas disaster case rests with the then central government of prime minister Rajiv Gandhi and the then Madhya Pradesh government headed by chief minister Arjun Singh."

Four killed in Jharkhand clash

Ranchi : Four people were killed -- including two who were burnt alive -- in a clash in Jharkhand's Sahebganj district, police said Thursday.

"One Sammad Ansari had gone, along with another person, to Lakshmi village of Sahebganj district allegedly to kill a person. The villagers surrounded Ansari and his associate and they were burnt alive in a house," Vinay Kumar Pandey, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Santhal Pargana region told IANS over telephone.

Army wants to quiz civilians in Kashmir staged shootout

Srinagar : The Indian Army wants to question three civilians named as co-accused and arrested for their involvement in an alleged staged shootout in a Jammu and Kashmir village in which three people labelled as militants were killed, an official said Thursday.

This, the official said, was to facilitate the court martial proceedings against suspended Major Upinder Singh of 4 Rajputana Rifles who police say lured the three Kashmiris -- all in their 20s -- promising them jobs and later gunning them down April 30.
