Boy killed in fresh Kashmir protests

Srinagar: A boy died during violent protests in the old city area of Srinagar Friday afternoon in Rajouri Kadal.

A Class 12 student Tufail Ahmad Matoo, 19, died in Rajouri Kadal area where clashes between stone pelting youths and the security forces broke out after Friday prayers.

CBI to quiz Ajmer blast accused on Mecca Masjid attack

Hyderabad : Two activists of a Hindu terror group accused in the October 2007 blast in the Ajmer Sharif shrine will be brought here by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for questioning in the Mecca Masjid bombing in May the same year.

The CBI, which has made headway in investigations into the Mecca Masjid bomb blast case, will bring Devender Gupta and Lokesh Sharma here next week. Both are members of the Abhinav Bharat and are currently lodged in Ajmer jail,

Bardhan blames Congress for injustice to Bhopal gas victims

Hyderabad : Communist Party of India (CPI) general secretary A.B. Bardhan Friday blamed the Congress party for injustice to the victims of Bhopal gas tragedy.

Talking to reporters here, he demanded that all those responsible for the industrial disaster, including the Union Carbide Corp's then chairman Warren Anderson, be punished.

The CPI leader wanted Anderson to be brought to India and tried in a court of law. "Unfortunately for the government, relations with the United States are more important than 20,000 deaths in the disaster," he said.

Congress denies Rajiv had a role in Anderson escape

New Delhi : The Congress party Friday strongly rejected a former prime ministerial aide P.C. Alexander's indication that the then prime minister Rajiv Gandhi had helped Warren Anderson, the CEO of Union Carbide Corp in 1984, escape from the country within days of Bhopal gas tragedy.

Alexander reportedly stated that Gandhi and then Madhya Pradesh chief minister Arjun Singh were directly in touch with each other over the escape of Anderson from the country barely days after the world's biggest industrial disaster in Bhopal Dec 2-3, 1984.

Patna : A full page colour advertisement in local dailies in Bihar projecting Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as being 'Muslim friendly' has been questioned by the people, activists and opposition parties.

The advertisement, with a big smiling pictrure of Modi and 'indisputable' facts about Muslims in Gujarat, was published in Hindi, English and Urdu dailies two days ahead of Modi's visit to the state.

They are part of a team of 30 brainy teens who have come to Finland from 16 countries to take part in the week-long Millennium Youth Camp being held in a forested area, abutting a lake, about an hour's drive from capital Helsinki.

Triple tragedy in family in Jammu and Kashmir

Jammu : Triple tragedy struck a household in Banihal area of Jammu and Kashmir when two sisters died of shock after seeing the body of their brother who was killed when he slipped into a gorge.

Police said that Abdul Latif, a resident of Sarach village in Banihal, 180 km north of Jammu, fell into the gorge Thursday.

When his body was brought home, one of his sisters Shafiqa Bano died of shock. Soon after, another sister Shehnaz collapsed and died.


Decision on Gujarat cop's bail plea Monday

Gandhinagar : A special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court Thursday reserved till Monday its decision on the bail plea of former Ahmedabad deputy commissioner of police Abhay Chudasama, arrested in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh staged shootout case.

Chudasama has sought three months bail to undergo surgery at a private hospital.

Arrested Gujarat police officer freed on bail

Gandhinagar: Former Ahmedabad deputy commissioner of police Abhay Chudasama, behind bars in connection with the alleged Sohrabuddin Sheikh staged shootout, was Thursday granted three months bail to undergo
surgery at a private hospital.

The Central Bureau of Investigation, which arrested him, had earlier opposed the interim bail plea in the court of the CBI judge G.K. Upadhayay on the grounds that Chudasama had tried to monitor their investigation in an unauthorised manner and also attempted to influence the key witnesses in the case.

India cautious on Iran sanctions, pitches for dialogue

New Delhi : With the UN Security Council (UNSC) Wednesday imposing fourth round of sanctions against Tehran, India has no choice but to implement new measures but New Delhi has let it be known that there is no alternative to dialogue to resolve the Iranian nuclear issue.

"Being a UN member, India will have to abide by the UNSC resolution. But we continue to advocate, as we have always done, dialogue and diplomacy to resolve issues relating to the Iranian nuclear programme," official sources said.
