Fresh violence in Hyderabad, restrictions imposed

Hyderabad: The communal clashes Sunday spread to more areas in the old city of Hyderabad as police clamped ban on gathering of five or more people and deployed additional forces to bring the situation under control.

Police fired shots in the air to disperse clashing groups in Kalapatthar area after a baton charge failed to bring the situation under control while mobs took to streets in Lal Darwaza and Shahali Banda areas Sunday evening, pelting stones and attacking vehicles.

Rajouri braveheart Rukhsana honoured with medal, cash

Jammu: Rukhsana Kousar, the brave heart of Rajouri who killed top Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militant Abu Osama in her house in September last year, Saturday received an award for her act of exemplary bravery.

The Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak was presented to Rukhsana, on behalf of President Pratibha Patil, by Rajouri Deputy Commissioner J.P.Singh at an official function in Rajouri, 160 km north of Jammu.

New Delhi: Asserting that Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has shown a great sense of responsibility in appearing before the Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigating Team probing 2002 riots cases, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said Sunday that Modi has proved his critics wrong.

"He (Modi) answered questions in a cool, calm, collected and cooperative way for nine hours," party spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman told reporters.

Kin demands job for girl whose legs Metro crushed

New Delhi : Two days after a Metro train ran over a young man and 22-year-old Mehzabeen and rendered her handicapped for life, her relatives demanded that the Delhi Metro or the state government should help by giving her a job.

Delhi Metro spokesperson Anuj Dayal, however, said that while the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) would take care of her medical expenses, it could not give a job to the victim since the Metro was "not responsible" for the accident.

SIT to submit report to apex court by April 30

Gandhinagar/New Delhi : R.K. Raghavan, the chief of the apex-court appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) that quizzed Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi over the 2002 riots, said the questioning was a "very big step forward" and the panel was likely to submit its report within the deadline of April 30.

Raghavan expressed his satisfaction with the work done by his team and the questioning of Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

CJI, Modi share dais at law college convocation

Gandhinagar : A day after he was questioned by a Supreme Court-appointed panel over his alleged role in the 2002 Gujarat riots, Chief Minister Narendra Modi shared the dais with Chief Justice of India K.G. Balakrishnan here Sunday at the first annual convocation of the Gujarat National Law University.

Modi was reportedly keen that his questioning at the hands of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) be completed Saturday itself due to the convocation Sunday. "He wanted the questioning done with and over before the GNLU convocation," sources close to him said.

Tension in old city of Hyderabad after religious clashes

Hyderabad : Parts of the old city of this Andhra Pradesh capital Sunday remained tense after religious clashes between two groups, which left 13 people injured Saturday night.

Paramilitary Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel and state police forces were deployed in Moosa Bowli, Hussaini Alam, Purana Pul, Begum Bazar and surrounding areas to prevent any untoward incident, police said.

Police commissioner A.K. Khan, who visited the old city late Saturday night, Sunday said the situation was now peaceful with no fresh incident.

Modi grilled for nine hours by SIT

Gandhinagar : Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi was Saturday grilled by a Supreme Court-appointed panel for over nine hours in two separate sessions that ended past midnight over his alleged complicity in not doing enough to stop the 2002 riots in the state.

The chief minister came out of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) headquarters at around 1.00 a.m. after a second round of questioning that lasted nearly four hours.

Asked by the waiting journalists if he was satisfied by the panel's probe, Modi answered: "It's the Supreme Court that has to be satisfied."
