Low conviction rate in criminal cases: who is responsible?

One agrees with the Law and Judiciary Minister (Maharashtra) Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil that ideally the conviction rate in criminal cases fought by the state should be hundred percent. The present conviction rate only shows enormous waste of public money and valuable working hours of the courts. But why does he want to discipline only the pleaders by imposing fifty per cent conviction rate?

1 killed in Lal Chowk shootout in Srinagar

Srinagar: One person was killed and four others were injured, including two CRPF personnel, when militants struck the heavily-guarded Lal Chowk commercial hub of the city on Tuesday morning.

Three civilians identified as Mehrajuddin Wani of Rainawari locality, Mehrajuddin Shah of Nawa Kadal and Khursheed Ahmad Parray of Khansahib area of Budgam district received gunshot wounds in the attack and were admitted to a hospital where Parray 28 succumbed to his injuries, official sources said.

Majlis-e-Ahrar help gain the possession of an occupied mosque in Punjab

Ludhiana: A deserted mosque was rehabilitated after 62 years at Longowal, a city in Punjab. The masjid was under occupation of Municipal Committee in recent years.

Few days ago when the roof of the main hall of the masjid collapsed, Municipal Committee shifted its office to one of the side rooms. Local Muslims who have been complaining about the illegal masjid occupation, alerted Majlis-e-Ahrar about the incident.

New Delhi: On 7 March 2007, when more than 5000 activists of Tamilnadu Muslim Munnetra Kazagham (TMMK) marched to Parliament from various parts of the state to demand reservation for Muslims in government services and educational institutions, they could not make news for mainstream media at all as the march was completely blacked out. Three years down the line situation seems not to have changed. Yesterday, there were several rallies on Muslim issues here but 'mainstream' newspapers have just buried the news.

BSP targeted in parliament for money garland, Bareilly violence

New Delhi : The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) was Tuesday put on the mat over a multi-crore money garland given to its leader and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati with Samajwadi Party, Congress, and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members questioning the extravagance in the Lok Sabha. The continuous uproar led to the house being adjourned for the day.

The Lok Sabha will now meet April 12, after a three-week break.

The members were on feet on the issue as the house re-assembled at 2 p.m. after two adjournments on the issue earlier in the day.

High court dismisses plea for de-sealing SIMI office

New Delhi: The Student Islamic Movement of India's (SIMI) plea to de-seal a south Delhi property housing its office was Tuesday rejected by the Delhi High Court, which said the request was "untenable in law".

The building was sealed after the central government banned the outfit in 2001 for alleged involvement in terrorist activities.

Curfew relaxed in Bareilly

Bareilly : Curfew in Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly district was relaxed for eight hours Tuesday for only the second time since it was imposed two weeks ago following a communal clash, authorities said.

"As situation is turning normal, we today (Tuesday) decided to relax the curfew from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.," Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) (Bareilly Range) Rajiv Sabharwal told reporters.

The curfew was first relaxed Monday.

Jamia teachers rally demands minority status for varsity

High court to hear pleas of Godhra accused Tuesday

Gandhinagar : The Gujarat High Court will Tuesday hear the plea of 79 accused in the Godhra train burning case, challenging a designated court's decision to consider the confession of the accused as evidence.

Earlier this month, a special court at the Sabarmati prison had turned down the accused' plea and started to consider the confession statements as evidence against them.

Designated Judge P.R. Patel had observed that a decision whether to accept the statements as evidence can be considered at a later stage and the trial should continue.
