Seminar on peaceful co-existence in Islam and Indian religions begin

New Delhi : The First International Seminar on Peaceful Co-existence in Islam and Indian Religions kicked off Saturday at India Islamic Cultural Centre in New Delhi.

The two-day seminar, organized by the office of the Al-Mustafa International University of Iran in New Delhi, aimed at building better relations between Islam and believers of various faiths in India.
The seminar was inaugurated by Dr. G R Mahdavi, Head of Al-Mustafa International University of Iran in New Delhi.

Right's panel upbeat about women's reservation bill

New Delhi: The National Commission for Women (NCW) Saturday expressed optimism over the passage of the women's reservation bill that will be tabled in parliament Monday and said it is a triumph of 14 years of struggle.

"We are very happy that the 14-year long struggle of this bill has been finally acknowledged and given a momentum," NCW chairperson Girija Vyas told reporters.

Women need 50 percent share in real power: Farooq Abdullah

Jammu: In the backdrop of Women's Reservation Bill being presented in the Rajya Sabha Monday, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah Saturday said that women in India need 50 percent share in real power.

"It's high time that women, who have been neglected for such a long time from holding real power, get 50 percent share in power," Abdullah, who is also the National Conference president, told reporters on the sidelines of a book release function here.

New Delhi: The absence of organised translation activity in literature and academia has led to cultural and intellectual distancing in Indian society, believes eminent historian Mushirul Hasan.

"This distancing has led to greater regionalisation and in some cases appropriation of languages. The unity in diversity is lost - and on a personal note, it has led to a gulf between my students and me," Hasan, a former Jamia Millia Islamia University vice-chancellor, said Saturday.

Women's quota bill in present form is injustice: Muslim group

New Delhi: The All India Milli Council, a Muslim group, Saturday demanded a "quota within quota" in the women's reservation bill and said it will hold a protest march Monday against the government's move to pass the legislation in its present form.

M. Manzoor Alam, general secretary of the Milli Council, said here Saturday that the protest march at Jantar Mantar would be joined by other religious minority groups and Dalit organisations.

"If passed, the bill will amount to injustice against the women belonging to minorities and Dalits," Alam said.

Nitish Kumar announces support for women's quota bill

Patna: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has come out in open support for the women's reservation bill, putting the ruling Janata Dal-United (JD-U) in a dilemma as party president Sharad Yadav has opposed the legislation.

"I am in support of the women's reservation bill in its present form, it should be pushed through soon," Nitish Kumar told reporters here Saturday.

More than 7,000 Kashmiris take exams to join police

Srinagar: More than 7,000 Kashmiri youth across the Valley Saturday took examinations to join the police force.

"More than 7,000 candidates who had passed the physical tests for selection to the posts of sub-inspector of police sat for the written exams in the Valley," Owais Ahmad, inspector general of police, told IANS.

"Similarly, 6,000 candidates sat for the same exam in the Jammu region," he added.

Gujarat probes shooting of inspector by officer

Ahmedabad: A probe has begun into an incident where a senior police officer shot an anti-terrorist squad (ATS) inspector during a mock drill in Surat last month, though the state home ministry had termed it an "accident" at that time.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Subhash Trivedi Friday handed over his service weapon to D.R. Patel, another deputy commissioner, who is conducting the enquiry.

The weapon is being sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) here for ballistic tests.

Lalu Prasad meets PM, demands all party meeting
