Two years on, 9 minority districts yet to send development plan to Centre

New Delhi: The multi-billion rupee development scheme, known as Multi-sectoral Development Programme (MsDP), for 90 minority concentration districts in the country will soon entre its third financial year, but about 10% of these districts haven't yet sent their plan to the Central Government. Interestingly, Delhi state's North East district with about 25% Muslim population is one among them. The state as well as centre is ruled by the Congress Party.

Riyadh Declaration: Some important points

New Delhi: Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz and Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh today signed Riyadh Declaration stressing on raising their cooperation to a strategic partnership covering security, economic, defence and political areas. The declaration signed in Riyadh on the last day of Indian premier's visit called for preservation of Afghanistan's sovereignty and independence, peaceful resolution of Iran's nuclear dispute and establishment of a sovereign, independent Palestinian State.

Two die in protests against Taslima Nasreen's article

Bangalore: Two people were killed, including one in police firing, as protests in Karnataka over the publication of a translated version of Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen's article in a Kannada daily turned violent Monday, police said.

Curfew has been clamped in Shimoga city, about 280 km from here, and prohibitory orders imposed in Hassan district, around 200 km from here, police said.

Hands crippled by polio, girl writes exam with pen in mouth

Kolkata: Nasima Khatun, 16, cannot hold a pen in her hands and write. A polio attack when she was five has left her hands crippled. But she has appeared for the Class 10 board exams in West Bengal and wrote the papers holding the pen in her mouth.

"Crippled hands and penury could not stop Nasima from appearing in the board exam. She is very studious and always scored good marks in her school exams," said Sheik Shafi Alam, headmaster of Golabari Pallimangal High School where she studies.

Holi celebrations set off Hindu-Muslim clash

Lucknow: Tension gripped Uttar Pradesh's Badosarai town in Barabanki district Monday afternoon following a "minor clash" between Hindus and Muslims over Holi celebrations.

No one was seriously injured in the incident, police said.

The clash between the two communities erupted when some Hindus, who were moving in a procession, tossed in the air coloured water-filled balloons, one of which hit a Muslim girl standing a few metres away from the procession.

Muslims join Hindus to celebrate Holi in Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow: Hindus and Muslims Monday came together and took out a procession, called a Holi Baraat, in this Uttar Pradesh capital to celebrate the festival of colours amid communal unity.

This is a decades old tradition followed by the members of both communities.

Hindus and Muslims were seen lost in Holi revelry while taking out the procession that had camels, horses and elephants pulling the decorated small chariots on which the revelers stood tall. They danced to the beat of the drums during the procession in the old city.

Muslims, Christians join Hindus to celebrate Holi in Orissa

Bhubaneswar: The Christian community in Orissa's Kandhamal district, which was hit by communal violence two years ago, joined their Hindu brethren Monday to celebrate Holi with much enthusiasm and bonding.

"They buried their differences and smeared colour on each other, distributed sweets and danced to the tune of drum beats at several places," a district police officer told IANS.

Thirty-eight people had been killed during the riots in Kandhamal.

Separatist shutdown affects life in Kashmir

Srinagar: Normal life was hit in the Kashmir Valley Monday after separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani called for a shutdown to protest the damage done to houses allegedly by security forces in Sopore town.

Public transport remained off the roads in Srinagar city. Shops and other business establishments were closed.

Reports from other parts of the valley indicated that the shutdown had adversely affected normal activities.
