Muslims hail court order on Andhra quota, want states to follow

Hyderabad/Patna : The Supreme Court order restoring four percent quota for backward class Muslims in government jobs and education in Andhra Pradesh has come as a relief for students aspiring for professional courses and has been welcomed by the community, which now wants more to states implement it.

Students, who feared they would lose an academic year because the Andhra Pradesh High Court last month quashed the quota, were elated with the Supreme Court's interim order. The court Thursday observed there was nothing wrong in providing a quota for Muslim backward classes.

Indian University to hold int’l seminar on Holy Quran

New Delhi : Islamic scholars, writers and academics from different parts of the world will be attending a three-day International Seminar on the Holy Quran, planned by the Arabic Department of Kerala University at Thiruvananthapuram from April 29.

The focus of the seminar would be the status of Quranic Arabic language in the knowledge era from a different perspective, according to A Nizarudeen, Head of the Department of Arabic in the university.

BJP silent on revisiting Babri ghost

New Delhi : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Friday refused to comment on a senior police officer testifying in a court against L.K. Advani that he gave an instigating speech in Ayodhya shortly before the demolition of the Babri Masjid.

"The BJP won't comment on that. It is a matter subjudice," party spokesperson Ramnath Kovind told reporters here when asked about the party's reaction to the statement by senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Anju Gupta in a Rae Bareli court.

Uttar Pradesh is top fake encounter specialist in India

New Delhi: As a state Uttar Pradesh is the top fake encounter specialist in the country with 716 fake encounter cases registered at National Human Rights Commission from the state in the last 16 years (1993-2009). No other state in the country has entered three-digit figure. Surprisingly, next to UP, however, is Bihar with 79 fake encounter cases. Andhra Pradesh is at No. 3 with 73 cases while Maharashtra with 61 is at No. 4. Andaman & Nicobar has just 1 case in 16 years.

NHRC lists Batla House as fake encounter

New Delhi: Surprised? But it's true. The official data of the official human rights watchdog, National Human Rights Commission, has included Batla House encounter among fake encounters in the country. In the last 16 years (1993-2009), there were 1224 fake encounters across the country. The September 19, 2008 Batla House encounter in which two alleged terror suspects were killed was also registered as a fake encounter, the NHRC data say.

Bihar welcomes Muslim reservation in Andhra Pradesh

Patna : Muslims in Bihar welcomed the Supreme Court decision to uphold the validity of four percent reservation for backward members of the Muslim community in Andhra Pradesh.

"It is a historical decision," chief of a Patna based influential Muslim body Imarat Shariah Maulana Syed Nizamuddin said.

The Supreme Court's order will have a long term effect for the development of Muslims, the most backward and poorest community in India, Nizamuddin, who is also the general secretary of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, told IANS.

Advani 'euphoric' on Babri demolition day, says eyewitness cop

Rae Bareli (Uttar Pradesh) : Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani "looked euphoric" as he declared in Ayodhya on Dec 6, 1992, shortly before the demolition of the Babri Masjid, that a Ram temple would be built on the site, police officer Anju Gupta testified before a court here Friday.

Gupta, who was then posted as assistant superintendent of police (ASP) in Ayodhya, was deposing before a special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court in this town, about 85 km from the state capital Lucknow.

Civilian wounded in Kashmir grenade explosion

Srinagar : One civilian was injured when separatist guerrillas hurled a grenade at a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) bunker in Jammu and Kashmir's Sopore town Friday.

Police said guerrillas targeted the bunker of the paramilitary force outside the State Bank of India branch in Sopore town, about 50 km from here, but the grenade exploded on the ground.

"The grenade exploded on the road injuring one civilian, named Tanveer Ahmad. He has been shifted to a hospital for treatment. The area has been surrounded for searches," a police official said.
