Activists protest Muslim cleric's sexist remark

New Delhi: Women activists Saturday staged a demonstration against a cleric who spoke against Muslim women's participation in politics.

Around 30 activists, mostly from the Muslim community, as well as filmmaker Gauhar Raza and lyricist Javed Akhtar gathered at the Jantar Mantar observatory to protest comments made by Lucknow-based Muslim cleric Kalbe Jawad regarding women's reservation bill.

Madhopur (Punjab): At a place where the Bharatiya Jana Sangh's founder Shyama Prasad Mookherjee broke the permit restriction to visit Jammu and Kashmir in 1953, leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) Saturday called for a "second struggle" for abolition of the Constitution's Article 370 and complete integration of the state with the rest of India.

New Delhi: All India Muslim Mahila Andolan today lambasted the comments of Shia cleric Maulana Kalbe Jawwad in which he reportedly said Muslim women have no role in politics, rather they should stay at home and produce children of good race. The group staged a protest against the comments and in support of Women Reservation Bill at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. The group condemned efforts not to pass the bill in its present form, for one reason or other.

Modi may not depose before SIT Sunday

Ahmedabad: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi is not likely to depose before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) Sunday on accusations made by Zakia Jaffri, widow of former Congress MP Ehsan Jaffri killed during the 2002 communal riots.

Beyond an acknowledgement of the notice sent to him, there has been no further response from the chief minister, sources in the SIT said.

SIT chief R.K. Raghavan said: "I am now in Chennai. My coming to Ahmedabad would depend on developments."

Lucknow: The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) in its 21st annual convention held at Nadwatul Uloom unianimously re-elected Maulana Rabey Hasan Nadwi as president in Lucknow on Saturday.

The board also directly elected Deputy Chairperson, Rajya Sabha, K Rehman Khan and Justice (retd.) Shah Mohammad Qadri as its founder members on Saturday.

Awami National Conference seeks arrears payment to employees

Jammu: The opposition Awami National Conference in Jammu and Kashmir Saturday criticised the state government for not paying employees the arrears due to them under the Sixth Pay Commission.

ANC vice president Muzaffar Shah criticised the National Conference-led coalition government and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who is also his cousin, for what he called "wasteful expenditure of the government on ministers and bureaucrats".

Kashmir to move bill on district jobs for locals

Jammu: Jammu and Kashmir Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ali Mohammad Sagar Saturday told the state assembly that a bill banning inter-district recruitment in the state will be introduced Monday.

"It (bill) has become necessary in view of the concern voiced by legislators and also to protect the rights of youth," he said.

Earlier in the day, main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and two of the ruling National Conference (NC) legislators staged a sit-in and later walked out of the assembly demanding introduction of a bill on the issue.

Dropout rate falls in Jammu and Kashmir schools

Jammu: Jammu and Kashmir has seen a steady decline in the dropout rate in schools and the government is making the maximum efforts to expand quality education in the state, a minister has said.

Education Minister Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed, in his reply in the state assembly on the grants of the departments under him, claimed Friday that the number of school children dropping out has gone down from 367,000 to 39,000 over a period of five years "due to the government's efforts".

Night curfew to continue in Bareilly

Bareilly: While night curfew in the trouble-hit areas of Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly district will continue, the authorities Saturday decided to lift all restrictions on vehicular movement.

"Be it two-wheelers or four-wheelers, from today (Saturday) there will not be any restrictions on the movement of vehicles on the roads," District Magistrate Anil Garg said at a press conference here.

"The situation is completely peaceful now," he said.

Earlier, barring autos and rickshaws, the authorities had restricted the movement of vehicles on roads.

Muslim law board to oppose any anti-Shariat law

Lucknow: In a major development, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) resolved Friday evening to oppose any court verdict that goes against the tenets of the Islamic Shariat.

The decision was taken on the opening day of the three-day AIMPLB conclave at the Nadwatul Ulema University of Islamic Studies here.

Akshardham attack accused's plea against witnesses dismissed

Gandhinagar: The Gujarat High Court Friday rejected the plea of Akshardham terror attack accused Shaukatullah Ghauri that two prosecution witnesses be also treated as accused.

A division bench of Justices Jayant Patel and R.H. Shukla rejected the plea as being not maintainable.

In his petition, Ghauri contended that the two witnesses - Ashfak Bhavnagari and Jalal Patel - were present in the meetings in Saudi Arabia where the attack was planned and had also collected money for terrorist activities.

Lucknow: Guided by 'zakat' - charity as envisaged by the Quran - villagers of Muslim-dominated Shirajpur in Uttar Pradesh have repaired roads, dug wells, established schools and are now building a bridge.

The village is located in Azamgarh, some 300 km from Lucknow, and its people say the apathy of public representatives towards their problems prompted them to take up development activities themselves.
