Mohsina Kidwai elected chairperson of Haj committee Posted: 10 Mar 2010 09:31 AM PST By IANS, New Delhi: Senior Congress leader Mohsina Kidwai was Wednesday elected chairperson of the Haj Committee of India, a government panel that makes arrangements for the Muslim pilgrimage to the holy cities of Makkah and Medina in Saudi Arabia. Hasan Ahmed and Aboo Bucker were elected vice chairmen at the meeting of the newly constituted committee, according to a statement by the ministry of external affairs. Kidwai is a Congress general secretary. |

"This is a great step towards women's empowerment. I would urge Indian Muslim women to enter politics and get themselves elected to parliament and state assemblies. They will have to empower themselves," the Grand Mufti of Kashmir, Maulana Bashir-ud-Din, told reporters here. |

"Islam strongly prohibits any means of violence. The stone pelting practice is surely un-Islamic. It causes inconvenience to people and propels more violence," the Grand Mufti told IANS here. Bashir-ud-Din heads the Sharia court of Jammu and Kashmir and is also the president of the state Personal Law Board. |

"This is another effort to press the government to recognize Jamia Millia Islamia as a Muslim minority educational institution in clear terms," said N.U. Khan, president, Jamia Teachers' Association. |

The trio also reiterated their opposition to the women's bill passed in the upper house Tuesday, reserving 33 percent seats in all legislatures for women, saying the proposed legislation should give special privileges to women from the Dalit, tribal and minority communities. |

The Catholic Church in Madhya Pradesh has said the government should, if it has to, teach the scriptures of all religions and not just the Hindu scriptures. |
