Modi does not appear before SIT Sunday

Gandhinagar: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi did not appear before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to depose Sunday, on accusations made by Zakia Jaffri, widow of former Congress MP Ehsan Jaffri killed during the 2002 communal riots.

This was as expected for SIT chief R.K.Raghavan was not present here nor was there any indication that the Gujarat chief minister was likely to present himself before it.

Muslim law board opposes communal violence bill

Lucknow: The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has expressed strong opposition to the communal violence bill as well as the growing "bonhomie between India and Israel."

Declaring this at the conclusion of its three-day annual convention at the Nadwatul Darul Uloom Islamic University here, AIMPLB spokesman Maulana Abdul Rahim Quraishi told a press conference Sunday evening: "The board takes exception to India's increasing proximity with Israel from where we have even entered into arms-purchase agreement."

New Delhi: Right now about 300 students of Aligarh Muslim University are sitting outside Allama Iqbal Hall inside the university campus demanding the authorities about the whereabouts of Class 12 student Mohd Ahmed of Azamgarh who went missing on Friday night and still traceless. Aligarh District police officials are camping near the hall and assuring the agitating students that they are doing their best to recover the boy.

Lucknow: The Executve Committee (EC) of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) in its 21st annual convention on Sunday expressed concern over growing Indo-Israel relations.

"For Israel we should stick to Nehruvian era and follow the same approach. Following Gandhi's views, India should oppose the atrocities on Palestinian people," said Maulana Abdul Raheem Qureshi, the assitant general secretary of the board while interacting with reporters on the concluding day of the board's convention in Nadwatul Uloom on Sunday.

Aligarh: Aligarh based the Millat Bedari Muhim Committee [MBMC] today strongly condemned the threat made by Raj Thackeray against film director Mahesh Bhatt.

In a letter to the Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram, MBMC demanded that the Government should lodge an FIR against Raj Thackeray for threatening Bhatt. The letter also asked that a separate Commission be setup to monitor threats by political groups.

Lucknow : The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) may been silent on the women's reservation bill. But when it came to reconstituting its executive body, it unanimously increasef the representation of women from one to five.

Announcing this on the last day of the board's three-day annual convention at the Nadwa Darul-Uloom Islamic university here, AIMPLB spokesman-cum-legal adviser Zafaryab Jilani told reporters Sunday: "We have nominated five women this time on the board's executive committee."

New Delhi: Eminent cleric Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan, in a telephonic talk with TwoCircles.net from Bareilly today, accused the then DM and DIG for the communal riots in the UP town on March 2 that continued about 10 days resulting in heavy losses of properties of Muslims. Khan, who was arrested for his alleged role in the violence but later given clean chit, said the top police officers were of communal mind and had connived with sitting BJP MLA for the riots.
