Apex court to reconsider order to probe Modi, 62 others

New Delhi, March 15 (IANS) The Supreme Court Monday decided to consider if it should recall its April 2009 order for probing the roles of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and 62 other top state politicians and officials in the 2002 communal riots.

"We will consider whether this order in its entirety should be continued or recalled," said an apex court bench, referring to the April 27, 2009, order by another bench of erstwhile Justice Arjit Pasayat and Justice Asok Kumar Ganguly.

Today, to reiterate the demand to declare Jamia Millia Islamia a Muslim Minority institution and reserve 50% of its seats for Muslim students, hundreds of students, teachers, old boys, community leaders and members of the community staged a Dharna at Jantar Mantar. The organizers also demanded the government that, it should not compel Jamia Millia Islamia to OBC reservation.

Scrap Religious discrimination in Reservation: 36 communities from 19 states

New Delhi: Demanding to scrap the religious discrimination in reservation for Scheduled Castes and include Muslims and Christian Dalits in SC list, All India Pasmanda Muslim Mahaz along with a number of Dalit groups (both Muslims and Christian) organized a mass rally at Jantar Mantar today. Implementation of Sachchar Committee and Mishra Commission's were also demanded. Members of 36 backward communities from 19 states took part in the rally.

Chennai: "So, can you sing 'Baa Baa Black Sheep' to the tune of 'Mary had a little lamb'?" asked Sadiya Saleh, the moderator of the workshop on Multiple Intelligences. One participant tried, but slowly went back to the original tune. "Well, people who are musically intelligent can!"

The workshop on Theory of Multiple Intelligences was held on Saturday March 13th at Al-Qamar Academy, an Islamic school in Chenai. The workshop was open to women from the general public and attended by about 40 women.

Women's Reservation Bill and politics of OBCs and minorities

After fourteen years of women's struggle, Rajya Sabha passed a women's Reservation Bill last week with two-third majority for constitutional amendment. The OBC satraps did their best to forestall the Bill but did not succeed. Their argument that the bill will benefit only upper caste Hindu women at the cost of OBCs and minority women is only superficial and would hardly bears scrutiny. Truth is more complex and has to be examined with all its complexity.

AIIMS to verify age of serial blast accused

New Delhi : A city court Monday directed the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) to determine the age of a suspected Indian Mujahideen (IM) terrorist, allegedly involved in serial blasts in Delhi and several other cities, who has claimed to be a minor.

Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kaveri Baweja sent Salman Ahmed to Tihar Jail and ordered the age-determination test after his counsel produced a medical report to support his claim of being a minor.

Rajya Sabha revokes suspension of four SP members

New Delhi : The Rajya Sabha Monday revoked the suspension of four Samajwadi Party (SP) members, amongst the seven MPs against whom action was taken for their unruly behaviour before the debate on the women's reservation bill last week.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal moved a motion recommending termination of action taken against Veerpal Singh Yadav, Nand Kishore Yadav, Amir Alam Khan and Kamal Akhtar after question hour in the Rajya Sabha.

Curfew relaxed in Bareilly, situation turning normal

Lucknow : With no fresh incident of violence reported in the last two days and the situation fast returning to normal, curfew in Bareilly district was relaxed Monday, nearly two weeks after a communal clash erupted in the Uttar Pradesh town, an official said.

"Taking into account the normal situation in parts of Bareilly, we today (Monday) relaxed the curfew during the morning hours," Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) (Bareilly Range) Rajiv Sabharwal told IANS over phone.

Bareilly is some 250 km from Lucknow.

Maneka seeks judicial probe into Bareilly riots

New Delhi : Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Maneka Gandhi Monday demanded a judicial probe into the violence in Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly district.

"I want a judicial inquiry into (Bareilly violence). The (central) government should step in and solve the problem," Gandhi said in the Lok Sabha.

Bareilly has been under curfew for days after being hit by communal violence.

A minor clash followed by sporadic arson March 2 led the administration to clamp curfew in several areas.
