Gujarat court acquits nine of waging war charges

Ahmedabad : A local court Friday acquitted nine people, including an advocate, who were charged with waging war against the nation and hatching a conspiracy to create terror in Gujarat after the 2002 communal riots.

Additional Sessions Judge A.H. Shah acquitted advocate Mohammed Ali and eight others - Mohammed Abdul Bari, Istekhar ul Hasan, Abdul Rahim, Mohammed Safiuddin, Saeed Akbar, Javedkhan Azizkhan, Aslam Nagori and Ahmed Hussain Mansuri.

The court, in its 125-page judgment, observed that the prosecution had failed to prove their case against the accused.

Amin tells court he fears for life in jail

Gandhinagar : Former deputy superintendent of police N.K. Amin, an accused in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh staged shoot-out case whose plea to turn approver is pending in court, has raised serious questions about his security in jail and told the court that his life is in danger.

He pleaded before the Ahmedabad court Friday for more security and has sought transfer from the present barrack.

Issue is terrorism, not its colour: Congress

New Delhi : Seeking to end the controversy over the "saffron terrorism" remarks of Home Minister P. Chidambaram, the Congress said Friday that the issue was terror and not its colour.

"Saffron, bhagwa or kesariya (Hindi words for saffron) is not an issue. The issue is terrorism. Terrorism does not have any colour. It has only one colour and it is black," Congress general secretary Janardan Dwivedi told reporters.

Dwivedi, who is in charge of the Congress' media department, said whether it is called saffron, green, white or red, terrorism is terrorism.

Uddhav demands Chidambaram's resignation

Mumbai : Reacting sharply to Home Minister P.Chidambaram's remarks on "saffron terrorism", Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray demanded his resignation from the cabinet.

Speaking to newspersons here Friday afternoon, Thackeray said that a person who does not understand the true colours of terror must not remain in the cabinet. "Chidambaram should resign for making such remarks," he demanded.

He also urged the Congress to make its stance clear on the entire issue of the "saffron terrorism" referred to by Chidambaram.

Maudany gets heart check-up, advised further tests

Bangalore : People's Democratic Party chief Abdul Nasir Maudany, jailed here for suspected involvement in the 2008 serial blasts here, Friday underwent check-up at a government-run cardiology institute in the city.

The tests showed him to be normal but he has been advised further check-up at a multi-specialty hospital, doctors at the Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research said.

Maudany, one of the 32 men chargesheeted for alleged involvement in the serial blasts in Bangalore, is said to be suffering from multiple ailments. He is wheel-chair bound.

She was Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur nabbed in connection with the Malegaon bombing. She was followed by arrest of one and half dozen people, all attached to saffron outfits of Sangh Parivar, in the same and other terror cases.

Maudany in judicial custody; bail plea to be considered on August 30

Bengaluru: Following the City Police Commissioner's statement that the police had no evidence of Abdunnasir Maudany's involvement in the Chinnaswamy stadium blasts, the police yesterday did not seek extension of his police custody and subsequently, Maudany has been remanded to judicial custody till September 11. Meanwhile, the Bengaluru Fast Track Sessions Court (V) has postponed the hearing of Maudany's bail plea to August 30.

Rights group urges Rajya Sabha to reject Prevention of Torture Bill

New Delhi: The Asian Centre for Human Rights (ACHR) has urged Members of the Rajya Sabha to reject the Prevention of Torture Bill (PTB), 2010 being introduced today as the definition of torture in the bill "does not comply with the United Nations Convention against Torture."

ACHR urged the Elders to direct the government to place the bill before the Parliamentary Standing Committee for holding public consultation with all the relevant stakeholders. The Bill was passed by Lok Sabha without any debate on 6 May 2010.

Apex court asks Gujarat to shift Ishrat Jahan case to SIT

New Delhi : The Supreme Court has stayed the transfer of investigations into the Ishrat Jahan staged-shootout case from the state police to the apex court-appointed special investigation team (SIT). The Gujarat High Court had ordered the transfer.

The apex court bench of Justice B. Sudarshan Reddy and Justice S.S. Nijjar stayed the transfer after counsel Kamini Jaiswal told the court that the Gujarat High Court by its Aug 12, 2010, order had given the state government 15 days time to issue the notification.

Life returns to normal for a day in Kashmir Valley

Srinagar : Life once again limped back to normal in Srinagar and other towns of the Kashmir Valley Friday with the lifting of curfew restrictions and the separatists calling off their protest for a day.

"Curfew has been lifted from Srinagar and all other towns of the valley today (Friday)," a police officer said here.

The hardline Hurriyat group headed by Syed Ali Geelani asked people to resume normal activities of life for a day.

Rajya Sabha adjourned over Chidambaram's saffron terror remarks

New Delhi : The Rajya Sabha was adjourned twice till noon Friday as Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiv Sena MPs protested Home Minister P. Chidambaram's remarks on "saffron terrorism" at a conference of state police chiefs.

The house was first adjourned on the issue till 11.22 a.m. and later till noon.

The issue came up soon after the house assembled for the day. Shiv Sena member Manohar Joshi objected to the use of the words "saffron terrorism" by the home minister and sought a clarification from the government. He was joined by BJP members.

Kashmiris for finding solution within India: Abdullah

New Delhi : Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister and union minister Farooq Abdullah Thursday made a forceful plea for autonomy as a solution to the problems besetting the troubled state, and added that it is time to tell Pakistan to return to India the parts of Kashmir under its control.

Participating in a special debate in the Lok Sabha on the unrest in the Kashmir Valley,

Abdullah also said that most Kashmiris were in favour of a solution within India, and not in Pakistan.
