Court puts curbs on Gujarat cop's arrest

Gandhinagar, Aug 16 (IANS) The Gujarat High Court Monday restrained the state police from arresting an additional director general of police (ADGP) in connection with a 26-year-old suspected staged shootout.

Justice R.H. Shukla ordered the state police's Criminal Investigation Department (CID) not to arrest ADGP Kuldip Sharma till a hearing Aug 20.

Sharma, a 1976-batch Indian Police Service officer, is posted as the managing director of the Gujarat Sheep and Wool Development Corporation since November 2009.

Gujarat riots: Plea to cancel bail of accused admitted

Gandhinagar: The Gujarat High Court Monday admitted a plea for cancelling the bail granted to Babu Bajrangi, a prime accused in the Naroda Patiya massacre during the 2002 Gujarat communal riots that followed the Godhra train carnage.

Bajrangi has been out on bail for almost eight years.

The state government moved the plea following an investigation by the Supreme Court-appointed special investigation team (SIT), which is probing the 2002 riot cases, pointed to Bajrangi's involvement.

Freedom Parade held in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, not in Kerala

Kozhikode: The Freedom Parade of the Popular Front of India was held in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu on Independence Day. The Parade was not held in Kerala as the respective district Collectors banned it in the remaining four districts also where it was not previously banned. The PFI condemned the government decision.

New Delhi : Jamia Millia Islamia university's biotechnology department has been rated one of the top 10 public institutes of India in a nationwide survey, a university official said Monday.

The biotechnology department of the university was surveyed under various categories like ranking by industry interaction, ranking by faculty score, ranking by infrastructure score and ranking by placement score.

Called the 'Sixth BioSpectrum Top 20 Biotechnology Schools Survey 2010', the survey was conducted by BioSpectrum, a scientific journal.

New pro-vice-chancellor for Jamia Millia

New Delhi : The Jamia Millia Islamia University has appointed S.M. Rashid the new pro-vice-chancellor, an official said Monday.

Professor Rashid, who was the dean of the faculty of natural sciences, specialises in remote-sensing and has been working in the area of cartography.

Speaking about his new appointment, Rashid said: "I would work in the best interest of the university and my job as pro-vice-chancellor would be to lend support to Vice-Chancellor Najeeb Jung. I would see to it that his dream of making Jamia Millia Islamia a world class university gets fulfilled."


Arabic and Persian scholars honoured

New Delhi: On the occasion of 64th Independence Day, scholars of Arabic, Persian and Sanskrit languages were conferred Certificate of Honour by the President of India, Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil.

While 15 scholars were honored from Sanskrit language, the scholars honored for Arabic and Persian languages were just 3 and 2 respectively.

Curfew, shutdown cripple life in Kashmir Valley

Srinagar : Life was paralysed across the Kashmir Valley Monday as separatists called for a shutdown and authorities imposed curfew in some places, including this summer capital, officials said.

"Curfew has been imposed in Srinagar city, Sopore and Bandipora towns to prevent any violence at these places. Restrictions imposed in other towns like Baramulla, Anantnag, Pulwama and Handwara would be reviewed during the day," a senior police officer said.

"We have lifted restrictions from Badgam town today (Monday)," he added.

Blind beggar hoists tricolour

Kolkata : As hundreds of people Sunday took part in Independence Day celebrations, a club in West Bengal's Murshidabad district bestowed the honour of raising the tri-colour on a teenaged blind beggar.

Bablu Sheikh, the blind beggar who stole the show in the flag-hoisting ceremony organised by the Beharampore youth club, was overjoyed.

The 16-year-old earns his daily bread by begging on the streets of Beharampore, 200 kms from Kolkata.

"It feels great. I am very happy with this honor. This independence day will always remain a memorable day of my life," he said.
