Sohrabuddin's brother wants to appear in Shah bail plea

Ahmedabad: Rubabuddin Sheikh, brother of Soharabuddin Sheikh killed in a staged shooutout in 2005, has sought permission from a court to participate in the proceedings on the bail plea filed by former Gujarat minister Amit Shah.

Shah was arrested July 25 by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with Sheikh's killing.

In a petition before special CBI Court Judge G.K. Upadhyaya, Rubabuddin said that granting bail to Shah would be against the principles of justice.

HC tribunal upholds ban on SIMI

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court tribunal Wednesday upheld the central government's decision to extend the ban imposed on the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI).

In February this year, the home ministry extended the ban by another two years on the SIMI after which the matter reached the tribunal for review.

The tribunal's order upholding the ban was sent to the ministry in a sealed cover.

Mobin Akhtar, counsel appearing on behalf of SIMI, said they will examine the case and contest it in the Supreme court.

One more person dies in Srinagar

Srinagar : The violence in the Kashmir Valley claimed its 45th victim since June 11 Tuesday with another person succumbing to bullet injuries following a clash with security forces.

Iqbal Ahmed had been injured in Chhanpora locality here Friday.

While 17 people were killed from June 11 to July 30, 28 have died in the last five days. Of the 45 killed so far, most have been killed in firing by security forces.

Srinagar : Stating that Kashmiris must be seen as the "oppressed and not as oppressors", hardline separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani Wednesday warned people against acts of arson and violence like stone pelting.

The chief of the hardline faction of Jammu and Kashmir's Hurriyat Conference was addressing a press conference at his Hyderpora residence after being discharged from the hospital where he had been admitted for treatment.

Amnesty says Indian forces violating their own manual in Kashmir

Srinagar, India : Indian security forces are not always complying with the international law and are even violating their own manual while dealing with the protesters in Kashmir, Amnesty International said Wednesday.

"Security forces should not use live ammunition except as a last resort to protect against a threat to life, the Amnesty said.

"Some of the recent demonstrations have turned violent, but the security forces should still respect and protect the right to life at all times," said Sam Zarifi, Amnesty International's Asia-Pacific Director.

Chidambaram appeals for peace in Kashmir

New Delhi : Home Minister P. Chidambaram Wednesday said there was reliable intelligence that militants may have mingled with crowds and fired at security forces in Jammu and Kashmir where a "cycle of violence" has raged for more than 50 days.

"There have been instances where the security forces have been fired upon by someone in the protesting crowds. There is reliable intelligence that some armed militants may have mingled with the crowds and fired at the security forces," he said in a statement in the Lok Sabha on the situation in Jammu and Kashmir.

Malaysian Indian woman wants her conversion to Islam invalidated

George Town (Malaysia) : An ethnic Indian housewife in Malaysia Wednesday said she would appeal against a civil court ruling that heard her plea questioning her conversion to Islam when she was seven years old.

Siti Hasnah Bangarama Abdullah, 28, was converted along with her four siblings in 1983 when her parents, both born Hindus, embraced Islam.

She sought a declaration from the court that her conversion to Islam was invalid, Star Online reported.

Freed by African rebels, Indian pilot on way home

New Delhi : After more than a week of captivity with African rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Indian pilot Syed Mazher will be back home with his family in Bangalore Thursday.

Syed Mazher, 25, who was serving as a co-pilot with a private airline, Goma Express, was taken hostage July 24 by Rwandan rebels after they attacked an airplane at an airstrip in Kitambe, about 25 km north of Walikale in DRC's North Kivu province.

New Delhi: There is no evidence of any terrorist activity going on in Kerala, said Minister of State for Home Affairs Ajay Makkan. He was responding to the question by KP Dhanapalan, MP, in the Lok Sabha.

The minister said that the state police was investigating the incident related to the chopping of the professor's hand. However, there was no request from the state government seeking a ban on the Popular Front of India.

Lucknow : After winning a 32-year-long court battle following which huge properties were restored to the erstwhile royal of Mahmoodabad by the apex court in 2005, an amendment in the enemy property law - related to those who migrated to Pakistan during partition - has brought him back to square one.

Amir Mohammad Khan, the erstwhile raja of Mahmoodabad, about 80 km from here in Sitapur district, will have to begin handing back possession of these properties from Wednesday.

Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court yesterday rejected the anticipatory bail plea submitted by Abdunnasir Ma'dani, the 31st accused in the 2008 Bengaluru blast case. Criminal Single Bench Judge Js N Ananda denied bail for Ma'dani on grounds that bail could not be allowed considering public interest, home security and national security as he was accused in a terrorism case. Ma'dani has decided to approach the Supreme Court for anticipatory bail.

70 Muslim homes looted, burned in Udaipur, police watched on

Jaipur: In a planned attack on Muslim families in Udaipur following murder of a person from the Meena community, at least 70 homes of Muslims were looted and then put on fire in the very presence of Police and civil administration of the district.

The incident took place in the last week of this past July leaving at least 500 Muslim families homeless in about half a dozen villages of Udaipur district in Rajasthan that is presently ruled by Congress.

Court rejects CBI demand for remand of Amit Shah

Ahmedabad : A CBI court Wednesday rejected the agency's demand for a seven-day custody of former Gujarat minister Amit Shah, arrested for the 2005 killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh.

Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) special judge A.I. Raval's ruling stunned the agency. "The CBI may challenge the decision. The CBI may go to the high court," a source in CBI told IANS.

The CBI had July 23 produced a 3,000-page chargesheet and accused Shah of murder, abduction and conspiracy in the case of alleged staged shootout.

Shah has been in judicial custody since July 25.
