Former Gujarat police chief Pandey, Johri seek more time from CBI

Gandhinagar: Summoned by the CBI for questioning in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh staged shootout case, both retired director general of Gujarat Police P.C. Pande and Rajkot police commissioner Geetha Johri have asked for more time.

Pande is on a trip to Kailash Mansarovar and has made it known that he would be back only Aug 18, while Johri has just returned from a training stint in London. The CBI had summoned Johri to appear on Tuesday and Pande a day later. The CBI will now fix revised dates, sources said.

Maulana Wahiduddin to get Rajiv Gandhi Sadbhavna Award

New Delhi: The 18th Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavana Award will be given to Maulana Wahiduddin Khan for his contribution towards promotion of communal harmony and peace, it was announced Monday.

Congress treasurer Motilal Vora, who is member secretary of the advisory committee of the Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavana Award, said in a statement that the award will be given to Maulana Wahiduddin Khan for his "outstanding contribution towards the promotion of communal harmony, peace and goodwill".

Jamia to organise conference on remote sensing

New Delhi : Experts from various institutions, including the premier Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), will participate in a day-long conference Tuesday on 'Remote Sensing and GIS for Environmental Management' organised by the Jamia Millia Islamia University.

The conference will cover new horizons in the areas of spatial technology for hydrology, water and air pollution, land degradation, land use planning and natural hazards, an official statement said.

Sit-in in Hyderabad against Kashmir protest killings

Hyderabad: The city-based Civil Liberties Monitoring Committee of India yesterday organized a sit-in in the Andhra Pradesh capital to protest against the killing of children in ongoing protests in Kashmir and demanded an end to all violent actions immediately.

The Hyderabad protesters also demanded withdrawal of the Armed forces from civilian areas immediately, handover of law and order to the state government and release of all the people arrested during demonstration and agitations.

Muvattupuzha (Kerala) : Naserudeen Elamaram, Kerala president of the radical Muslim group Popular Front of India (PFI), was Monday summoned by police in connection with last month's attack on a college professor, police sources said

Malayalam teacher T.J. Joseph's hand was chopped off July 4 for allegedly preparing a question paper derogatory to Prophet Mohammed.

Jospeh, who teaches at the New Man College Thodupuzha, is on bail for preparing the alleged inflammatory question paper.

Lucknow : The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) is all set to create its independent education board to institutionalize and modernize madrassa education in the country.

Lucknow's Naib Imam and prominent member of AIMPLB national executive Maulana Khalid Rasheed told IANS here Monday: "The new board would be set up on the pattern of CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) and ICSE (Indian Council of Secondary Education), with a view to promote literacy among Muslims."

Famous Oriya singer Sikandar Alam is dead

Bhubaneswar : Popular Oriya singer Mohammad Sikandar Alam, who was known for his devotional songs to the Hindu god Jagannath, has died of a heart attack, a family member said Monday. He was 71.

Alam, who had been admitted to a private hospital here Thursday after he complained of chest pain, died of a massive heart attack Sunday night.

He is survived by his widow Naima, and two daughters - actress Sophia and singer Nazia.

Alam was the president of Orissa Sangeet Natak Academy.

Another youth dies, curfew in Srinagar

Srinagar : The toll in the ongoing cycle of violence in the Kashmir Valley rose to 50 with another youth succumbing to injuries sustained in firing by security forces, police said Monday as curfew was imposed in Srinagar to contain tensions.

"Fida Nabi Lone, 20, who had been injured in Shalteng outskirts of Srinagar city last week, when a violent mob defied curfew and attacked security forces, died in hospital during the night (Sunday)," a police officer said here.
