Tension grips Kashmir, body count up

Srinagar: Three persons including a 17 year girl were killed today as police opened fire on protesters in Pampore. Five more are reported dead when angry crowd burned a police station where stored ammunition exploded resulting in more deaths and injuries.

The day began with latest victim of more than a moth old protest- a young girl who succumbed to her injuries she sustained during firing at Khrew, Pampore.

UPA ally Muslim League wants price rise checked

Chennai: The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), an ally of the ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA), Sunday asked the central government to intervene and control the spiralling prices of essential commodities.

At a meeting, chaired by IUML president and Minister of State for Railways E. Ahamed, the party expressed concern over the price rise and adopted a resolution calling for an efficient public distribution system.

Teenaged girl, two others killed in police firing in Kashmir

Srinagar: Two 17-year-olds, including a girl, and another young man were killed Sunday when security personnel fired on mobs attacking police stations in south Kashmir's Pulwama district as escalating violence engulfed Kashmir Valley.

With the three deaths, the toll of protesters killed in police firing across the Valley since Friday has risen to nine.

The law and order situation has deteriorated with violent protests rocking most cities and towns and mobs attacking police stations, police camps, vehicles on the highways and also beating up trapped security men.

PM to release stamp on Muslim League leader

New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will release a commemorative stamp in honour of late Indian Union Muslim League(IUML) leader Panakkad Syed Mohammedali Shihab Thangal here Monday, party president and union Minister of State for Railways E. Ahamed said.

Ahamed told IANS that the commemorative stamp would be released by the prime minister at a function at his residence.

Kashmir on boil, many hurt in police action

Srinagar: The large scale protest demonstrations in defiance of curfew are pouring in from various towns of Kashmir valley.

Scores of people were reportedly holding demonstrations in Sopore, Naidkhai and Kreeri areas of north Kashmir and there were reports of clashes in Baramulla.

People in Naidkhai and adjoining areas of Sopore have defied curfew on Sunday and have held protest demonstrations. At least three persons have got injured in the police action, while thousands of additional troops have been deployed in the area.

Curfew continues in Srinagar after violence

Srinagar : Curfew continued in summer capital Sunday after two days of violence in which six people were killed in firing by security forces. Separatists have called for a shutdown across the Kashmir Valley to protest the killings, prolonging the "difficult times" for residents.

Police vehicles fitted with loudspeakers made repeated announcements in both the Old City and uptown areas, urging people to remain indoors as curfew was imposed in the city for the second consecutive day.

Woman judges and Sharia

Recently two women judges have been appointed in Malaysia in the Sharia court but strangely enough their appointment is conditional on their not handling cases pertaining to marriage and divorce.

They can handle other cases like the custody of children, maintenance, property, etc. The appointment of women judges is a welcome move but the conditionality attached seems strange.
