Islamic centre to be built near 9/11 Ground Zero

New York: A private group Tuesday won the right to build an Islamic centre, which includes a mosque, near the site of the destroyed World Trade Center despite vocal opposition from victims of the 9/11 terrorist attack.

The Cordoba Institute said it plans to spend $100 million to rebuild the site at 45 Park Place in lower Manhattan after New York's Landmarks Preservation Commission voted 9-0 against granting landmark status to the site.

Amin's plea to turn approver adjourned till Aug 10

Ahmedabad: The hearing on a plea filed by former deputy superintendent of police N.K. Amin to turn approver in the 2005 Sohrabuddin Sheikh staged shootout has been adjourned by a court till Aug 10.

Amin, himself an accused in the case, is in jail in connection with the disappearance of Sheikh's wife Kausarbi.

He had filed an application in the special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court to turn an approver.

His eight co-accused policemen, including Indian Police Service officers D.G. Vanzara, and Rajkumar Pandian -- have opposed his plea.

Kollam (Kerala): People's Democratic Party (PDP) chief Abdul Nazir Maudany, who was Tuesday denied anticipatory bail by the Karnataka High Court in the 2008 Bangalore bomb blast case, said he was being "purposely trapped".

Maudany was named as the 31st accused in the case and has been trying for anticipatory bail, first in a lower court in Bangalore, which was turned down last month, and then in the high court which too refused his plea Tuesday.

Srinagar: They have seen many bouts of "revolution" earlier, but this time it is different, say Kashmiris caught in the growing spiral of violence and protests that have engulfed the valley for the past nearly two months and seen scores dead in firing by security forces.

On the streets and even in households, the atmosphere is of mourning and mounting anger.

The daily dance of death since July 11 has crossed 40, with 26 killed since Friday, including four in firing Tuesday till the time of writing.

Four killed in firing as Kashmir violence continues unabated

Srinagar: Four people, including a 16-year-old, were killed as security forces opened fire on curfew-defying mobs across the Kashmir Valley Tuesday while another youth died of injuries, taking to 27 the toll in five days of unabated violence.

The latest death is of a youth who was critically wounded in the massive explosion Sunday at the Khrew police post in Pulwama after it was torched by the protesters. He died of his injuries in a Srinagar hospital in the evening.

Arabic, Persian scholars being neglected for presidential awards

New Delhi: Is there any shortage of Arabic and Persian scholars in the country who can be named for 'Maharishi Badrayan Vyas Samman'—a prestigious annual Presidential award? Not at all, claimed a group of senior Arabic and Persian scholars who are upset as no scholar from the two languages has been selected for the award for past several years.

If they are not being recommended for the award it is the result of negligence from award selection panel otherwise there are many who deserve the award, they say.

Another protester killed in Srinagar firing, toll 24

Srinagar : A 16-year-old was killed in police firing in Srinagar - the second to die Tuesday - as protesters across the old city defied the curfew to take to the streets. This takes to 24 the toll in the last five days of unending violence in the Kashmir Valley.

A farmer was injured when he was allegedly shot at by the security forces in north Kashmir's Baramulla district, while two protesters were injured when police fired on a mob defying the curfew in central Badgam district.

Anees Ahmad was killed when security forces fired at a mob in Srinagar's Eidgah area.

Tamil Muslim group holds blood donation camp in Saudia

Dammam (Saudi Arabia): The Tamil Nadu Tauheed Jamaat organized blood donation camps in Dammam and Jubail in Saudi Arabia for Haj and Umrah pilgrims. The camps were held in the last two weeks of July. TNTJ was able to collect 130 units of blood at the camps.

Our minority government is for minorities: Karunanidhi

Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu) : The Tamil Nadu government may be by the "minority" DMK but it is for the minorities, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi Monday said.

"We are not ashamed of being called as a minority government. I am happy to hear my government being called as minority government. Ours is the only government that fights for the rights of minorities - Christians and Muslims. We will raise our voice in their support in all the forums," Karunanidhi said, addressing a public rally here.
