500 still missing in Leh, stranded tourists flown out

Srinagar/Jammu/New Delhi: Over 500 people, including a Spanish tourist and 20 Army soldiers, were missing Sunday, two days after a cloudburst caused flash floods in Jammu and Kashmir's Leh town, claiming at least 132 lives and causing widespread destruction.

Four Air India flights reached the town Sunday to evacuate stranded passengers, most of them foreigners, while the Indian Air Force sent more planes with relief supplies.

Bihar centre for poor IIT aspirants impresses Obama envoy

Patna: Rashad Hussain, son of an Indian migrant couple from Bihar who is US special envoy to the Organization of the Islamic Conference, Sunday visited Bihar's free coaching centre here for poor students aspiring for an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) berth.

After visiting Super 30, a free coaching centre that helps economically backward students crack the IIT-Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE), he said that President Barack Obama will also love to see the institute.

Former Gujarat minister Amit Shah remanded to judicial custody

Gandhinagar: Former Gujarat minister Amit Shah was Sunday evening remanded to 13 days judicial custody after two days interrogation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the 2005 killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh in a staged shootout.

His questioning, which began Saturday, continued Sunday morning after the former minister spent the night in the CBI lockup here. It ended at 6.30 p.m. after which he was produced before CBI special judge A.Y. Dave at his residence.

Government clueless about anarchy in Kashmir: Advani

New Delhi: Terming the situation in Kashmir as one "of total anarchy", with the government "clueless" about dealing with it, senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani said Sunday that the presence of security forces in the Valley should not be diluted.

"In the Kashmir Valley, the situation today is of total anarchy. And the government seems clueless how to deal with it," Advani said in the latest post on his blog.

Panthers Party to attend PM's Kashmir meet

Jammu: The Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party Sunday said it will attend an all-party meet on Kashmir called by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi Tuesday.

The party had boycotted the all-party meet convened by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah July 12, contending he had lost the "moral right to rule" as his "misgovernance had brought the state to a brink of disaster". Almost 50 people have died and hundreds have been injured in violence in the Kashmir Valley since June 11.

New Delhi : There is nothing like Islamic terrorism as terrorism has no religion and is rejected by good people the world over, including Muslims, says Rashad Hussain, the Indian-origin US special envoy to the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC).

"Religious leaders throughout the world and communities should make it clear that this (terrorism) is an ideology that is rejected by people in all faiths and has roots in no religion," Hussain, an American of Indian descent who is tasked with bridging the gap between America and Muslim nations, told IANS.

CBI continues to quiz Amit Shah

Gandhinagar : Former Gujarat minister Amit Shah continued to be quizzed by CBI officials here Sunday, a day after he was grilled for nine hours in connection with the 2005 killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh in a staged shootout.

The former minister of state for home was at the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) office here in the morning for the final day of questioning. His two-day period of CBI remand ends Sunday night.

Kochi: An international seminar on Islamic finance will be held in Kochi on October 4, 5 and 6, 2010. The seminar is organized by the Islamic Research and Training Institute (IRTI) of the Islamic Development Bank Group and the Al Jamia al Islamiya (Islamic University) Kerala. Papers have been invited for the seminar. An essay competition too has been acnnounced.

No curfew, no shutdown, Kashmir gets a day's breather

Srinagar : Curfew was lifted from the entire Kashmir Valley Sunday as markets and banks opened after 10 days of restrictions and separatist-sponsored shutdowns.

"Curfew has been lifted from the Valley and there are no restrictions in place anywhere. We are closely monitoring the situation," a police officer told IANS here.

Despite being a public holiday, shops, banks and post offices opened early and public transport was also seen plying.

Delhi rocks with “pro-freedom” slogans, Curfew relaxed in Kashmir

Srinagar: The authorities relaxed curfew in eight police stations in Srinagar and several areas in south and central Kashmir on Saturday.

"The curfew was lifted completely in Budgam, Ganderbal, and Handwara districts," said a spokesman of the district magistrates.

In Srinagar, there was relaxation in curfew from 11.30 am to 4 pm, said police.

Earlier on Saturday, the relaxation period was set from 11.30 am to 2 pm but was extended by 2 hours, they said.
