Make sure no child is killed in Kashmir, women's group urges

New Delhi : "Why has Kashmir lost children to a conflict they don't even understand?" -- a women's organization that calls itself 'Mothers of India' asked Friday and urged the government to stop innocent killings in the troubled valley.

Calling for a "peaceful resolution to (the) mindless violence" in Jammu and Kashmir that has left nearly 50 people dead in three weeks, 'Mothers of India' called all mothers across India to "make sure that no child is killed in Kashmir, that no mother cries in silence and that violence does not beget more violence".

New Delhi : The Jamia Millia Islamia centre for learning Friday hosted a conversation on reading and writing between novelists Geeta Hariharan and Tabish Khair who dwelt on the critical and creative processes integral to writers to hone their skills.

Organised by the department of English, the event saw Hariharan, the writer of several novels and short stories, and Khair, whose new book, "The Thing about Thugs", set in Victorian London was published by HarperCollins-India and released last week, reading out excerpts from their books.

CBI gets two-day custody of Amit Shah

Ahmedabad : The Gujarat High Court Friday granted two-day custody of former minister of state Amit Shah to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the 2005 Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake shootout case.

Justice Akil Quereshi granted the custody after the CBI Thursday challenged in the high court the denial of remand of Shah, who has been arrested in the case.

Veteran lawyer K.T.S. Tulsi will represent the CBI in the high court.

Cops summon top PFI leaders in chopping case

Muvattupuzha (Kerala) : Kerala Police have summoned two top leaders of the radical Muslim group Popular Front of India in connection with the case of a college professor's hand being chopped off for allegedly preparing a question paper derogatory to Prophet Mohammed.

P. Abdul Hameed and Ashraf Moulavi have been asked to appear before the police Monday. Fifteen activists of PFI have been arrested for the July 4 attack on T.J. Joseph., a Malayalam teacher at the New Man College Thodupuzha. He is on bail for preparing the alleged inflammatory question paper.

Jamia gives free coaching to civil service aspirants

New Delhi : Jamia Millia Islamia Friday invited applications for free coaching from civil service aspirants belonging to minority communities, Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) and Other Backward Classes (OBCs).

The coaching classes, which started in 1984, get more than 500 applications every year from all over the country.

"Out of more than 500 applications, we select 50 candidates on the basis of the entrance test," said an official from the Centre for Coaching and Career Planning (CCCP), Jamia Milia Islamia.

Patna : Referring to Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Muslim leaders as Jaichand and Mir Jafar, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) general secretary Tariq Anwar Friday said they enjoy no better position than the backstabbers in history.

"The Muslim leaders in the saffron party not only lack support of their community but are also playing the role of Jaichand and Mir Jafar for self political gains," Anwar said two days after BJP's Shahnawaz Hussain claimed that his party was not "untouchable" for the Muslims.

New Delhi: The Kerala Chief Minister VS Achuthanandan should immediately withdraw his controversial statement that there were deliberate efforts to make the state Muslim-majority in 20 years, demanded noted writers and civil rights activists including Arundhati Roy in a statement.

They asked the political leaders not to repeat such statements which destroy the communal harmony prevailing in Kerala.

Around 40 including Dr BD Sharma, Sumit Chakravarty, Raj Kishore, Dr Mehar Engineer, Prof Hargopal, S Bismilla, GN Saibaba and Zafarul Islam Khan signed the statement.

Srinagar : Curfew continued in Srinagar and in other major towns in the Kashmir Valley Friday to prevent violent protests that have claimed 48 lives since June. People are facing an acute shortage of essentials in several areas.

"Curfew continues in Srinagar and major towns of the Valley. People are advised to remain indoors and ensure that children do not fall prey to the designs of anti-social and miscreant elements," a senior police officer said here.

Toll in Leh flash floods now 85, likely to rise

Srinagar : At least 85 people were killed and almost 350 injured in flash floods triggered by a massive cloudburst that hit Leh town of Jammu and Kashmir's Ladakh region, washing away several government buildings and houses, police said Friday.

"So far, 85 dead bodies have been recovered in the Leh tragedy and the death toll is likely to rise. 340 people have been injured and they are undergoing treatment in Leh hospitals," Inspector General of Police (Kashmir zone) Farooq Ahmad told IANS.

Freed Indian pilot back home, wants to forget ordeal

Bangalore: Syed Mazhar, the Indian pilot who was taken hostage by rebels in the Congo July 24 and freed Tuesday, flew in here late Thursday saying he wanted to forget the ordeal.

"I had given up all hopes of being safely released," the 25-year-old Bangalorean told reporters on his arrival.

He was, however, reluctant to give details about his time in captivity.

Mazhar, a co-pilot with Congolese airline Goma Express, was taken captive by the rebels who attacked his aircraft on a remote airstrip in the Congo's tin-mining zone in North Kivu province.
