Shia cleric comes to Mahmoodabad ex-royal's rescue

Lucknow: Prominent Shia scholar and cleric Maulana Kalbe Jawaad Thursday sprung a surprise by coming out in support of the erstwhile royal of Mahmoodabad who was suddenly deprived of his properties that he had retrieved after fighting a 32-year-long court battle.

If it was the Supreme Court that had entitled Ameer Mohammad Khan of Mahmoodabad, about 80 km from here, to get back his family estates worth billions in different cities of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, it was an ordinance promulgated last week by President Pratibha Patil that brought him back to square one.

Young MPs appeal to Kashmiri youth for calm

New Delhi: A day after Home Minister P. Chidambaram stressed on dialogue as the way forward for addressing the problems in Kashmir, a group of 40 young MPs from across the spectrum Thursday appealed to the youth in the Valley to "exercise restraint" and put their trust in a dialogue for working out a solution.

"What has happened in the recent past has been very unfortunate and we are deeply concerned...we urge our young brothers and sisters in J and K to exercise restraint and have trust in the power of dialogue," the joint appeal said.

New Delhi: The Jamia Millia Islamia's Maulana Mohamed Ali Jauhar Academy of Third World Studies Thursday organised a talk intended to promote better Indian understanding of Pakistan.

The talk on "The Idea of Pakistan in the Colonial Muslim Press (1932-1949)", by Thierry DiCostanzo from the University of Strasbourg (France), was presided over by Professor Salil Misra from Indira Gandhi National Open University's school of Social Sciences.

Court seeks Gujarat, Shah's response on CBI's custody plea

Gandhinagar: The Gujarat High Court Thursday issued notices to the state government and former minister of state for home Amit Shah on a petition filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) challenging a designated court's order turning down his remand plea in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh case.

The CBI plea will be taken up for further hearing Friday.

Meanwhile, the agency grilled former additional director general of police O.P. Mathur at their headquarters here for nine hours. He is likely to be summoned again for questioning.

Parliament passes bill to amend Minority Educational Institutions Act

New Delhi: Parliamentary approval was Thursday accorded to a bill amending the National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions Act to enable the central government decide on the status of such institutions without consulting the states.

The National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions (Amendment) Bill, 2010, which had earlier been passed by the Lok Sabha, was passed by the Rajya Sabha Thursday by a voice vote.

Gadkari urges PM to stop Waqf property misuse

New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Nitin Gadkari has urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to take steps to stop misappropriation of the multi-billion-rupee Waqf properties in the country and said the funds should be used for the betterment of the Muslim community.

In a letter to Manmohan Singh, Gadkari said it was a "matter of serious concern that the Waqf properties are encroached upon". The administration of the properties was also in a bad shape, he added.

Pulwama rocks with bullets sounds, 1 Killed

Srinagar: A 30-year-old youth has been killed in police and CRPF firing in Zadoora Pulwama district in south Kashmir.

The youth has been identified as Shabir Ahmed of Lonepora Newa in Pulwama.

Shabir had sustained critical injuries when police and CRPF opened fire on peaceful protesters near Puwlama Degree College this afternoon. He was rushed to SMHS hospital where he succumbed.

"Shabbir had recieved a bullet in his neck and died at the hospital, said doctor at SMHS.

Government assures steps to promote Urdu

New Delhi : The central government will take appropriate steps to promote the Urdu language, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said in the Lok Sabha Thursday.

Mukherjee's assurance came after the leaders of all political parties, central ministers and even Speaker Meira Kumar expressed the need to strengthen the Urdu language.

"There are no two opinions about the importance of the Urdu language. It is part of the heritage of India," Mukherjee said.

He said the central government will ask all the state governments to initiate steps to strengthen this language.

BJP leaders meet PM over Kashmir situation

New Delhi : Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Thursday told a delegation of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders, including legislators from Jammu and Kashmir, that the government's first priority was restoration of peace and stability in the troubled state and nothing would be done to demoralise the security forces stationed there.

Senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj said the prime minister also assured the party delegation that the government had no hesitation in calling an all-party meeting to discuss the situation in the troubled state.

CBI challenges Shah remand rejection in high court

Ahmedabad : The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Thursday challenged in the Gujarat High Court the denial of remand of former minister of state for home Amit Shah, arrested in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake shootout case.

The matter will come up before Justice Akil Qureshi later in the day. Veteran lawyer K.T.S. Tulsi will represent the CBI.

The Special CBI court Wednesday rejected the CBI plea to take Shah on remand for further questioning in connection with the case.

Civilian succumbs to bullet injury, Kashmir toll rises to 47

Srinagar : The violence in the Kashmir Valley claimed its 47th victim since June 11 as a civilian Thursday succumbed to a bullet injury received during protests here a day earlier.

Fifty-year-old Gulam Muhammad Badyari was injured in firing by security forces late Wednesday when a mob attacked a paramilitary picket in Gunpatyar area, police said.

Doctors at the hospital where the victim was admitted said he succumbed to his injuries. His body was being handed over to his relatives.

Former policeman appears before CBI in Sohrabuddin case

Gandhinagar : O.P. Mathur, former additional director general of police, appeared before the CBI Thursday for questioning in connection with the 2005 Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake shootout case.

Mathur was head of the state CID (Crime) department which was heading the investigation into the case before the Supreme Court handed it over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Mathur had been issued summons to appear before the CBI.
