Kashmir death toll rises to 62, protests continue

Srinagar: The fresh tension erupts in Kashmir valley after the death of two civilians. One man has been killed in firing in Anantnag district today and a teenager was killed in Sopore last night.

In Sopore, the police have registered a murder case against the CRPF for the first time since the recent spate of civilian deaths in Kashmir began, after the death of 18-year-old Mudassir Nazir in pellet firing.

Shamsur Rahman Faruqi honoured by Pakistan’s civilian award Sitara-i-Imtiaz

New Delhi: Eminent Urdu critic and writer Shamsur Rahman Faruqi has been honoured by the Pakistani government by giving its third most highest civilian award "Sitara-i-Imtiaz."

Faruqi edited Urdu literary magazine "Shabkhoon" which was published regularly for forty years before ceasing publication in 2005. In 2009 he was awarded "Padma Shri" by the Indian government for his work in the field of literature.

APCR condemns civilian killings in Kashmir

killing of unarmed protestors in police firings in the Kashmir valley and urged the government to
withdraw armed forces from civilian areas.

Shireen Madiha has finally stepped into the university on her conditions. She had refused to bow down to the union's diktat that every woman teacher will have to wear a burqa on campus.

Now she has succeeded and the union is forced to accept its defeat. Shireen [her name wrongly appeared as Sirin Middya in some newspapers] had invited the ire of the students' union in Kolkata's Aliah University, where she taught Bangla literature, for not wearing the veil.

Muslim scholar gets Sadhbhavana Award

New Delhi : Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said Friday that India needs the services of people who work for strengthening social unity.

Presenting the Rajiv Gandhi National Sadhbhavana Award to noted Islamic scholar Maulana Wahidudddin Khan, the prime minister said the award is given every year to a personality who had contributed to increasing social unity.

New Delhi : Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan doesn't seem to shy away when it comes to expressing his sentiments for the nation.

Describing his nationality, Shah Rukh tweeted: "I am half Hyderabadi (mom) half Pathan(Dad), some Kashmiri (grandmom). Born in Delhi, live in Mumbai. Have a punjabi wife and own Kolkata (India Premier League) team. Indian at heart (sic)."

The 44-year-old is currently shooting in Hyderabad and feels nostalgic with his visit to the city after 12 years.

28-year-old protester killed in Kashmir, toll rises to 62

Srinagar : A 28-year-old man was killed in Jammu and Kashmir's Anantnag district Friday when security forces opened fire at a mob attacking a local police station. With this, the toll of civilians in the ongoing unrest since June 11 rose to 62.

"A violent mob first attacked shopkeepers who opened for the day's business in Bijbehara town forcing closure of the markets there. Then they attacked Bijbehara police station and indulged in stone pelting, forcing security forces to use rubber bullets to quell the protesters," a senior police officer told IANS.

Policemen suspended for cremating Muslim

Patna : Two police officers have been suspended here after a Muslim banker found dead near a park was mistakenly identified as a beggar and cremated according to Hindu rites.

The body of Mohd Ishrafil, a 46-year-old State Bank of India official, was recovered near Gandhi Maidan last week. He was cremated within three hours.

According to police, Ishrafil's body was cremated after officials assumed he was a beggar. "It was a big mistake on the part of the police," an officer admitted Friday.

Teenager killed in Kashmir, toll 61

Srinagar : Thousands of people defied curfew in Jammu and Kashmir's Sopore town Friday morning after an 18-year-old succumbed to his injuries sustained in firing by security forces, taking the civilian toll since June 11 to 61, officials said.

Mudasir Nazir, 18, was killed and two people were hurt when Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) troopers opened fire Thursday evening after a violent mob attacked their picket in Sopore town, about 50 km from here, police said.

New Delhi : The arguments by the defence counsel of three more of the 14 accused in the Sep 13, 2008 Delhi serial blasts case ended Thursday, with all contending there was no evidence to prove their guilt.

With these, the arguments for seven of the accused - all represented by lawyer M.S. Khan, are over. Those for the remaining seven will start Sep 27.

Appearing for Sadiq Sheikh, Zia ul Rehman and Qayamuddin Kapadia, Khan argued that no circumstantial evidence is available in their case.

Gujarat riots: SIT to probe officials' inaction

New Delhi : The Supreme Court Thursday permitted the Special Investigating Team (SIT) probing the 2002 post-Godhra riot cases in Gujarat to investigate allegations of inaction by the state government during the carnage at Ahmedabad's Gulberg Society.

The court order came on a complaint filed by Zakia Nasim, widow of former Congress MP Ehsan Jaffri burnt alive by a mob at the society, alleging a larger conspiracy behind inaction of the state government machinery.
