CBI seeks enhanced security for Gujarat cop in jail

Ahmedabad : The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Monday sought enhanced security in jail for former deputy superintendent of police N.K. Amin whose plea for turning approver in the Sohrabuddin-Kausarbi murder case is awaiting court orders.

The petition was filed by the premier investigating agency before the special CBI court in the wake of an attempted contract killing conspiracy on the life of Amin which came to light recently.

Ishrat Jahan killing: Court inquires about SIT's view

Gandhinagar : The Gujarat High Court Monday asked the advocate general to verify if the Supreme Court-appointed special investigation team (SIT) was inclined to take up the probe into the 2004 Ishrat Jahan killing in a suspected staged-shootout by Gujarat Police.

The SIT, headed by former Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) director R.K. Raghavan, is probing key cases related to the 2002 post-Godhra communal riots in the state.

Two Punjab teachers attacked with acid

Chandigarh : Two teachers working for a private business networking company were admitted to a hospital in Punjab's Malerkotla town Monday following an acid attack on them by unidentified people, police said.

Police officials in Malerkotla, 130 km from here, said that both the teachers, Abdul Gaffar and Mohammad Arif, were admitted to local government hospital after the attack.

"We have recorded their statements and have registered a case against three people, including the owner of a private business networking company," an area police official said.

Three killed in Kashmir by Hizbul Mujahideen

Srinagar : The Hizbul Mujahideen has killed three people, including a mother and a daughter, in separate incidents in Kashmir, police said Monday.

The incidents took place late Sunday.

According to police, Muhammad Hussain Gorsi in Damal Hanjipora village of Kulgam district lost his wife Shakeela, 40, and daughter Zarina, 19, when gunmen broke into their home.

"The gunmen managed to escape," a police official said.

Srinagar : One more person injured in firing by security forces in Kashmir Valley succumbed to his injuries Monday, when restrictions and curfew continued in several towns, including this summer capital that again saw deserted streets and most businesses and educational establishments shut.

The death toll in the unrest that began here June 11 has risen to 63 with the passing away of Bilal Ahmad Sheikh, 22. He had been shot in Singhpora village near Pattan town of Baramulla district Aug 14 during clashes between stone pelting mobs and the security forces.

New Delhi: Thirteen candidates preparing for Indian Civil Services under the patronship of Zakat Foundation of India have cleared Preliminary exam conducted by the UPSC and whose results were declared two days ago. The information was provided to the media by ZFI president Dr Syed Zafar Mahmood.

ZFI had conducted ability test in most of states in the country to select candidates for civil services coaching. The Delhi-based group had selected 34 candidates.
