Foreign ministry holding back 11000 haj seats: UP Hajj Committee

Lucknow: Senior cabinet minister and Chairman, State Haj Committee (SHC) Naseemuddin Siddiqui on Tuesday blamed the foreign ministry for with-holding 11000 haj seats.

"They have kept 11000 seats and allotting them to VIPs and others. This quota should be immediately released to various state's haj committee for general muslims," said Siddiqui who was re-elected as Chairman of UP's state Haj Committee on Tuesday at Lucknow.

Karnataka BJP for anti-cow slaughter stir, ticks off governor

Bangalore : The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in Karnataka will go ahead with its planned state-wide agitation to press for an early presidential nod to the anti-cow slaughter bill despite Governor H.R. Bhardwaj's displeasure over it.

The state legislature passed the bill to ban cattle slaughter amidst opposition from political parties, various Dalit organizations and noted writers who said the measure was against certain sections of the society and their eating habits.

Maudany not involved in Bangalore stadium blast: Counsel

Thiruvananthapuram : Counsel for Abdul Nasir Maudany has termed as "baseless" a Karnataka minister's statement that the jailed People's Democratic Party leader has confessed to his involvement in the Chinnaswamy Stadium bomb blast in April ahead of an IPL match.

Counsel Ali Akbar said the statement of Karnataka Home Minister V.S. Acharya was baseless and the minister "is trying to make political capital through such statements".

A rare normal day for Kashmir

Srinagar: An uneasy calm prevails in the Kashmir Valley on Tuesday again.
Schools and business establishments have reopened after a four daylong strike. Vehicles too have come back on the roads.

According to Hurriyat (G) programme sheet people have been called for no strike today. Meanwhile, the fresh protest chart of Hurriyat (G) was announced in the evening.

Banks were also seen functional while people were seen in long queues outside ATMs withdrawing money.

Traffic jams were reported from many places especially city's commercial hub Lal Chowk.

Jammu : The Shiromani Gurudawara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) is to send a delegation to the Kashmir Valley to meet members of the Sikh community following anonymous letters asking them to embrace Islam or face dire consequences, an official said Tuesday.

A delegation of the SGPC, Amritsar, led by its president Avtar Singh Makkar, was scheduled to visit the valley Aug 20. But the plans were rescheduled after the community leaders in Kashmir said the SGPC team's arrival in Srinagar could be "misinterpreted and complicate the situation".

New York : An Indian has been arrested for carrying jehadi literature at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, a media report said.

Vijay Kumar, 40, was arrested Friday after security officials searched his luggage when they noticed him behaving strangely, the New York Post reported Monday. Kumar said he is from Mumbai.

Officers found books and diagrams on espionage, information on US military weaponry, publications mentioning "jehad" and "infidels," brass knuckles and at least $8,000 in US bills.

Trial begins in Babri Masjid demolition case

Lucknow: The trial in the criminal case of Babri Masjid demolition began with the recording of statement of the then SHO Priyamvada Nath Shukla on Monday by Special Judge (Ayodhya Issue) in Lucknow. Shukla, who was the SHO, on December 6, 1992 had lodged the FIR regarding the demolition of the mosque at Ram Janam Bhoomi police station in Ayodhya. The court has framed the charges in crime number 197/92 u/s 153A, 153B, 295, 332, 395 and 120B of Indian Penal Code.
