2 killed, 50 hurt in clashes in Kashmir, curfew tomorrow

Srinagar: The Jammu & Kashmir government on Friday evening announced complete curfew in Srinagar city on Saturday.

"Curfew will remain in force in the entire city on Saturday to prevent any further loss of life." However, it is unclear whether the rest of Kashmir will have a declared or undeclared curfew, official spokesperson said.
Earlier, Security forces opened fire on protesters as fresh violence on Friday erupted in the Kashmir Valley, resulting two persons dead and 50 others injured.

Poll panel working to make NRI voting practical: New CEC

New Delhi : The Election Commission is discussing the various "logistical issues" to make voting rights "practical" for non-resident Indians (NRIs), the new Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) S.Y. Quraishi said Friday.

"We have done some discussions with the ministry of overseas Indian affairs and other departments. We are trying to find a way out," Quraishi told reporters here.

Srinagar, India : A group of prominent Indian Muslims on Friday issued an appeal to sponsors of ongoing anti-India agitation in Kashmir to allow resumption of educational activities here.

"With the ongoing agitation against the atrocities of the government forces and the killings of the innocent youth in Kashmir valley, the biggest victim is the student community", the group said in a joint statement on Friday.

Flash floods inundate north Kashmir villages

Srinagar : Flash floods have inundated 48 villages in north Kashmir, police said Friday, adding that three people trapped by flood waters were rescued by an army helicopter.

Police said Gulam Ahmad Shah, Muhammad Ashraf Chopan and Sadam Hussain Chopan were trapped for more than 36 hours in the flood waters in Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara district.

Kochi: PM Jamal, Chief Executive Officer of the Kerala Waqf Board, has reportedly approached the Kerala High Court seeking the prevention of further action on the Waqf Enquiry Commission Report. The petition filed by PM Jamal reportedly asks the HC to direct the government not to take any further action on the report which denied him justice.

The petition reportedly says that the report was made without hearing his part. The petition also accuses the government of playing political revenge on him.

SDPI march banned in Ernkulam district

Kochi: The marches and meetings of the Social Democratic Party have been banned in the Ernakulam district, according to reports. The order was issued by ADM KN Raji who is in charge of the District Collector. The ban would be effective till August 15. The ban applicable to all organisations related to the Popular Front of India was reportedly taken based on intelligence reports that the march may lead to law and order problems.

Protesters clash with security men in Srinagar, one hurt

Srinagar : A teenager was critically injured when security forces fired at a protesting mob that defied curfew restrictions in the summer capital Srinagar Friday.

Iqbal Khan sustained a bullet wound in his head when the mob clashed with security forces in uptown Chanapora locality, five kilometres from the city centre Lal Chowk.

"The injured person was moved to the S.M.H.S hospital where attending doctors have referred him to Soura Medical Institute. Doctors said the teenager was very critical and battling for life," a source in the hospital told IANS.

Soz speaking out of turn: National Conference

Jammu : Members of the ruling National Conference in Jammu and Kashmir are not too happy with Saifuddin Soz, leader of their ally Congress, for going public with government decisions on dealing with the turbulent situation in the Valley before the state cabinet formally announced them.

"It's highly regrettable that Soz speaks out of turn," a senior National Conference (NC)leader told IANS.

Party leaders now feel the state Congress chief is undermining the sanctity of the cabinet.

930 arrested during Kashmir protests: state police

Srinagar: There are only seventy one persons in police custody, who were arrested following eruption of law and order problems in the Valley and not hundreds as reported by a section of media, said police.

According to a police spokesman, state police have arrested 930 persons across the valley under various preventive measures in connection with several stone pelting and peace disruption incidents from May 1, 2010 to July 27, 2010.
