Lucknow: The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court reserved its verdict in the Ramjanambhoomi-Babri Masjid title issue on Monday. The special full bench comprising Justice SU Khan, Justice Sudhir Agarwal and Justice Dhramveer Sharma heard the counsels of both the parties besides video footage late in the evening before reserving their verdict. The court also stated that the judgment will be delivered any day after September 15.

New Delhi: Minority Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid Monday said Islam has played a "great role" in shaping the country's "Indianness" in terms of art, culture and social behaviour.

"Islam stands for peace, brotherhood and prosperity and in India this religion has played a great role in shaping the art, culture and social behaviour that today typically signifies the 'Indianness'," Khurshid said, releasing a book on Islam here.

He stressed on the need to "soak our souls into the idea of secularism".

Gujarat cop to turn approver in Sohrabuddin staged shootout

Ahmedabad: Former deputy superintendent of police N.K. Amin's lawyer Monday moved the CBI court here for the retired cop to turn approver in the 2005 killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh in a staged shootout.

Amin is an accused in the fake shootout case.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court is also hearing a plea by the probe agency to question former Gujarat minister Amit Shah, who is charged with alleged involvement in Sheikh's killing, in judicial custody.

Shah was sent to judicial custody by the court Sunday for 14 days after he surrendered before it.

Ahmedabad: Gujarat's former minister Amit Shah, arrested in connection with the 2005 Sohrabuddin Sheikh killing, Monday filed a bail plea in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) special court which fixed Aug 2 for its hearing.

Noted lawyer Ram Jethmalani filed the bail plea of the former minister who was sent to 14 days judicial custody Sunday after he surrendered before the investigating agency.

Earlier, the CBI sought permission from the court to question Shah in jail.

Ahmedabad: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Monday sought permission from a special court to question Gujarat's former minister Amit Shah in jail in connection with the 2005 Sohrabuddin Sheikh killing.

Noted lawyer Ram Jethmalani appeared for the former minister in court.

Shah was sent to 14 days judicial custody Sunday after he surrendered before the investigating agency.

After his surrender, the former minister was whisked away to the residence of CBI judge A.Y. Dave, who sent him to judicial custody as the CBI did not seek his remand.

Increased security for Kerala's Mullaperiyar dam

Thiruvananthapuram : Security would be increased for the Mullaperiyar dam in Kerala's Idukki district, specially in the wake of radical Muslim group Popular Front of India (PFI) being probed for suspected terror links, state Water Resources Minister N.K. Premachandran said Monday.

There are three ways to reach the dam, of which two are adequately covered with proper security arrangements. A third passage to the dam is through the forest that is guarded only by forest officers, Premachandran said.

Srinagar: After a day's break, restrictions were today imposed on the movement of people in parts of Srinagar and Baramulla districts after protests over the recovery of the body of a missing youth and alleged custodial death of a militant even as the Hurriyat (G) again enforced a shutdown disrupting life.

Thousands of police and paramilitary forces on patrol have asked residents to stay indoors in major towns to prevent street protests.

Srinagar : Authorities imposed restrictions in many areas of Srinagar to prevent violence as a shutdown called by separatists crippled life here Monday.

"Curfew has been imposed in Batmaloo locality of the city while restrictions are in place in uptown Maisuma and old city areas," a police officer said here.

Hardline separatist Hurriyat group headed by Syed Ali Geelani has called for a shutdown across the Kashmir Valley Monday to protest alleged human rights violations by the security forces.

Lucknow : Union Human Resource Development Minister (HRD) Kapil Sibal clarified on Sunday that madrasas have been clearly kept out of the purview of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act 2009 (RTE). The HRD Minister was interacting with media personals during his visit to Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU).

"We can only interfere in the madrasas imparting religious education if the community wishes so. They are governed by Article 30 and nobody can go above that," Sibal said.
