NHRC notice to Kerala Police on harassment of Muslim families

New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notice to the Kerala police chief on a complaint that Muslim families are being harassed, an official said Tuesday.

NHRC has asked for a report within two weeks in connection with a complaint alleging that the police, in the guise of investigating an attack on T.J. Joseph, a professor of Newman's College, are harassing some Muslim families.

Joseph was attacked and had his right hand chopped off for allegedly preparing a question paper with derogatory references to Prophet Mohammad.

Sold by father, boy hurt in train accident faces uncertain future

Suri (West Bengal): Ashraful Haq, 12, was sold off by his father to a blind beggar, who was taking him to Ranchi in the ill-fated Vananchal Express for helping him in getting alms. But the beggar died in the train accident in West Bengal's Birbhum district and Ashraful is now left to fend for himself.

Ashraful is the eldest son of Intezab Ali, a resident of Samsi in Malda district.

"My father is very poor. I have two other brothers. We hardly get two square meals a day," said Ashraful, now under treatment at the Suri district hospital.

Panaji: The four Sanatan Sanstha (SS) members accused of carrying out the 2009 Diwali-eve blast in Goa were for the first time Tuesday reffered to as "terrorists" by the state home department.

State Home Minister Ravi Naik said in a written reply to the legislative assembly: "In the year 2009/10, four terrorists have been arrested by Goa Police in bomb blast incidents, which took place at Margao and Verna, respectively, on the night of Diwali i.e. on 16/10/2010."

India bans visa clearance for jobs in Libya

Barabanki: Jahangirabad Media Institute of Barabanki in Uttar Pradesh has announced to give scholarship of Rs. 40,000 to all students of minority communities who will be selected for one-year 'Diploma in Television Programme Production' of the institute for the academic year 2010-11.

Restrictions imposed in Srinagar

Srinagar: Restrictions were imposed in this Jammu and Kashmir summer capital Tuesday to thwart separatist protests here, police said.

Hardline Hurriyat group headed by Syed Ali Geelani called for the protests in the Kashmir Valley to demand release of detained separatist leaders.

"Restrictions have been imposed in Srinagar city to protect life and property of civilians here," a senior police officer said.

Educational institutions, public transport, banks, post offices, markets and other business establishments remained closed in the city.

Kashmir: Another youth died in police action, many wounded in Baramulla

Srinagar: Another youth has been killed in Baramulla, North Kashmir when police opened fire on mourners here in north Kashmir on Monday.

Reports said, hundreds of mourners carrying the body of Faizan Ahmed, who was chased to death allegedly by the force personnel on Saturday, were fired upon near the office of deputy commissioner Baramulla.
In the police action a youth Fayaz Ahmed Khanday of Bunyar, Baramulla died on the spot while two others sustained critical injuries.
