Kashmir papers to resume publication Monday

Srinagar: Kashmir newspapers will hit the stands Monday as the local press decided to resume their publication after four days of shutdown.

The local press had suspended the publication of the newspapers last week after the imposition of an indefinite curfew and cancellation of the curfew passes for journalists.

The decision to resume publication came after a meeting between state Information Secretary Khurshid Ahmad Ganai and the local editors.

Srinagar: The Kashmir Valley remained calm Sunday as a separatist shutdown closed markets and stopped public transport here, but the efforts to bring normalcy to the region received a setback with opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) choosing to stay away from an all-party meet called Monday by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah over the violence in the state.

PDP president Mehbooba Mufti stood her ground and turned down Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's request to attend the all-party meeting.

Srinagar: The decision of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to stay away from the all-party meeting called Monday by Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has disappointed political watchers here, even as ruling National Conference leaders say the government must take further political initiatives to control the volatile situation in the state.

"The all-party meeting being held here tomorrow (Monday) cannot deliver any magic solutions pertaining to the present law and order situation in Kashmir," a senior National Conference minister said.

The protest was aimed to condemn recent killings of innocent civilians in Kashmir and also to protest Indian military response to people's right to protest.

Hyderabad: Civil Liberties Monitoring Committee has expressed its deep concerns over the violation of human rights in the Kashmir valley. In a letter sent to the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, it has demanded from the government of India, to withdraw the armed forces from the valley and restore the life and liberty of Kashmiri people.

Condemning the recent violence in the state, it has termed the use of army against the civilians, who are protesting in democratic manner, "a violation of national and international human rights guidelines."

Srinagar : Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti stood her ground Sunday and turned down Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's request to attend Monday's all-party meeting called by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah over the violence in Jammu and Kashmir.

"It was very kind of the prime minister to call me. I have deep regard for the PM. He advised us to attend the meeting. But it was painful to convey my inability to attend the meeting," Mehbooba told reporters, a day after Manmohan Singh called her urging her to reconsider her refusal to attend the meeting.

Restrictions in Srinagar again, life mutes

Srinagar: Authorities re-imposed curfew-like restrictions in some areas of Srinagar on Sunday against the shutdown call given by, All parties Hurriyat Conference (Geelani).

Earlier on Saturday, curfew was re-imposed in Maisuma area of Srinagar and three other districts Anantnag, Pulwama, and Kakpora after clashes between protesters and security forces.

Now 24-hour long curfews break, restrictions were imposed again in the Old City and uptown Maisuma and Batamalloo in Srinagar.
