Fresh violence in Baramulla, 1 person injured

Srinagar: One person has injured in north Kashmir town of Baramulla Friday afternoon, after Police opened fire on the stone-pelting protestors.

The injured person has been identified as Suhail Ahmad Jarnail, of Kakarhamam locality in the town.

According to reports, a group of people took out a demonstration on Friday afternoon in the town. As the procession was stopped by the Police, the protesters hurled stones. Soon, the Police opened fire injuring the youth.

Curfew relaxed in Kashmir till Saturday evening

Srinagar: Curfew was relaxed indefinitely in the Kashmir Valley Friday evening, an official said.

"Curfew has been relaxed in wake of a festival at Hazratbal Shrine. Relaxation will continue till Saturday evening," Pillai told state-run Doordarshan Kendra.

The curfew was relaxed in all parts of the Kashmir Valley from 8 p.m. onwards, the official added.

The head cleric of Srinagar had Friday appealed to the state government to relax the curfew so that people could observe the Shab-e-Meraj religious festival.

Strike in Jharkhand over idol theft, Muslims lend support

Ranchi : Several parts of Jharkhand, including the state capital, shut down Friday in response to a strike called by Hindu religious groups, and supported by Muslims, to protest the theft of a three-century-old idol of a Hindu goddess from a revered temple in Ramgarh district.

The strike was called by the Hindu religious group, Mahaveer Madal Samiti, and supported by more than a dozen organisations like Kali Sena. The strike was also supported by Muslims.

According to police, more than 1,700 people have been arrested from different parts of the state for the strike.

EU gives 2 million euros for humanitarian aid for J&K

Brussels: The European Union has allocated 2 million euros for the implementation of humanitarian actions focusing on the vulnerable populations affected by the situation in Jammu and Kashmir.

A statment issued here Friday by the European Commisison said " fatalities still occur in the region, and armed groups have recently vowed to spread more violence, hampering so the work of humanitarian aid organizations in these areas. "

Hurriyat leader held for instigating violence

Srinagar : Shabir Ahmad Wani, a middle rung leader of Jammu and Kashmir's hardline Hurriyat group, has been arrested here for allegedly instigating violence in the valley, police said Friday.

Wani was arrested late Thursday based on intercepts of a phone conversation between him and another person identified as Ghulam Ahmad Dar, a police official said.

"The middle rung Hurriyat leader was arrested after his phone conversation with Ghulam Ahmad Dar during which Wani had told his friend that 10-15 people should be martyred during protests with security forces," he said.

First Hajj flight from Kerala on October 9

Kozhikode: The first Hajj flight of this year from Kerala will fly from the Karippur International Airport on October 9. The decision was taken I the annual Hajj meeting convened by the External Affairs Ministry in Delhi.

The flights from Karippur will take the Hajis from Kerala, Lakshadweep and Mangalore. The Hajj flight service will be in function till November 11. The Saudi Airlines, entrusted for the task this year, will arrange Air Bus that can carry 300 persons for the purpose.
