Temporary normalcy returns in Kashmir

Srinagar: An uneasy calm prevails in the Kashmir Valley, Schools, banks and business establishments have reopened after days of curfew, restrictions and shutdowns, Kashmir Valley is abuzz with normal life on Sunday as the Hurriyat (G) called for the resumption of normal activities on the day. Vehicles too have come back on the roads.

Despite an official holiday on Sunday, most banks, private-run schools and shops were open in Srinagar.

Shah goes to jail, CBI doesn't seek remand

Ahmedabad: On the run for three days, Gujarat's disgraced former minister Amit Shah was Sunday sent to Sarabmati Jail here for 14 days over an alleged murder, after he dramatically surfaced at a media meet and surrendered to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The entire drama lasted around six hours from the time Shah walked into the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) office here at 11.35 a.m. and vehemently denied charges that he was involved in the November 2005 gunning down by police of Sohrabuddin Sheikh, an alleged Lakshar-e-Taiba activist.

Federation of traders in Kashmir suspend cross border trade

Srinagar: The forum of traders in the Kashmir valley have suspended cross border trade with Muzafarabad in Pakistan through the Line of Control (LoC) for the past one week.

Speaking to the media persons at Srinagar on Sunday, a trader attributed this suspension to recent unrest in the valley.

Mumbai Crime Branch to enquire into attack on Abu Salem

Mumbai: The Crime Branch of the Mumbai police will investigate the attack on mafia don Abu Salem, allegedly by an aide of rival gangster Dawood Ibrahim, inside the Arthur Road Jail, a senior officer said here Sunday.

"We are in the process of taking over the investigation into the attack on Salem,," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Nisar Tamboli told IANS.

Salem, 43, was attacked during breakfast time Saturday with a sharpened spoon allegedly by Mohammed Dossa, a member of absconding mafia don Dawood Ibrahim's gang. Salem had injuries on the face and neck.

Army not to hand over men accused of killings

Jammu: The Indian Army has refused to hand over five soldiers, including a colonel and a major, charged with the killing of three villagers in Kupwara in April to the Jammu and Kashmir Police.

The army says that an internal enquiry was on against its men for the alleged killing of the three in Machil village in April, informed sources said Sunday.

The police had filed the chargesheet in a court against Colonel D.K. Pathania and four other soldiers. They were charged with killing the three and then claiming they died in a shootout.

Geelani, others held in Kashmir to be released?

Jammu: The Jammu and Kashmir government is reviewing the detention and arrest of hardline separatist Syed Ali Shah Geelani and many others in a bid to bring peace to the valley, an official said Sunday.

Over 40 people were arrested under the Public Safety Act (PSA) that empowers the government to arrest and lodge a person in jail without trial for one year.

The PSA prisoners, including Geelani, are among the over 500 arrested since June in the Kashmir Valley during the past two months in the wake of massive street protests over civilian killings.

Srinagar buzzes with life after a week

Srinagar: Markets overflowed with shoppers, vendors put up their wares and roads saw heavy traffic as Srinagar and other major towns of the Kashmir Valley Sunday sprang to life after a week of separatist shutdowns and official restrictions.

The Jammu and Kashmir Bank and a few other private and cooperative banks here opened despite it being a Sunday to provide cash to customers who could not avail of any banking facilities last week.

Women's quota, nuclear liability - two hot potato bills in monsoon session

New Delhi: Two contentious pieces of legislation, on women's reservation and civil nuclear liability, are among 59 bills listed for consideration during the monsoon session of parliament beginning Monday.

Parties opposed to the women's reservation bill are ready for battle in the Lok Sabha where it is to be tabled, while the Left and BJP said they will contest the nuclear bill tooth and nail.

Amit Shah surfaces, says allegations false

Ahmedabad: Missing former Gujarat minister Amit Shah, accused in the 2005 staged killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh, surfaced dramatically at a press conference by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) here Sunday and claimed the allegations against him were "fabricated and politically motivated".

Shah, who had been missing since Thursday, walked in at a press conference where the BJP state unit chief R.C. Faldu was addressing the press. Shah, who has been charge-sheeted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), said he would go to the CBI office after the conference.

Amarnath yatra sees over 300,000 pilgrims

Jammu: More than 300,000 pilgrims have come to offer prayers at the revered Amarnath cave shrine in Jammu and Kashmir so far, with a month still to go for the yatra to conclude. Shrine officials said Sunday that the arrivals this year could surpass previous records.

"On an average, almost 10,000 pilgrims a day have visited the shrine and if this trend continues, the number would surpass all previous arrivals," an official of the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board told IANS.

Modi forwards Shah's resignation to governor

Gandhinagar: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi Saturday forwarded the resignation of his Minister of State for Home Amit Shah, allegedly involved in the 2005 staged killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh, to Governor Kamla Beniwal, recommending it be accepted.

He had announced the resignation in New Delhi earlier, where he went to attend the 55th meeting of the National Development Council, the country's top policy forum.
