British PM rules out mediation on Kashmir

New Delhi: A day before he holds talks here, British Prime Minister David Cameron Wednesday ruled out any bid by Britain to mediate on the Kashmir dispute and stressed that it was for India and Pakistan to settle the issue.

"I don't think Britain is a great place to mediate on this issue," the 43-year-old Cameron, who is on a two-day visit to India, told Prannoy Roy in an interview on NDTV.

Need to control Hindu terror groups: Yechury

New Delhi: Warning against the growing network of Hindutva terror groups, Communist party of India-Marxist leader Sitaram Yechury Wednesday said the government and security agencies must take firm action against such groups.

"The government will have to take firm action against these groups which are promoting Hindutva terror," Yechury said on the sidelines of a symposium on Hindutva terror groups organised by the Safdar Hashmi Memorial Trust here.

Lucknow's Urdu University to begin classes from 2011

Lucknow: State's Higher Education Minister Rakesh Dhar Tripathi said on Wednesday that the teaching at University of Urdu Arbi and Farsi will begin from July 2011. He said that apart from the three languages the universirty will also impart teaching in other relevant contemporary subjects. The Minister was speaking on the occasion of plantation drive function on the university premises at Hardoi-Sitapur Byepass.

Kalbe Jawwad writes to UP Home Secretary for removing encroachment from Masjid

Lucknow: In a letter to the state home secretary on Wednesday, Shia cleric and Imam-e-Juma Maulana Syed Kalbe Jawwad had urged for removing encroachment from Masjid Noor Mahal in Narhi, Hazratganj. Jawwad also lashed out at the local police for playing partisan role in the episode.

Amit Shah quizzed by CBI, feigns memory lapse

Ahmedabad: Former Gujarat minister Amit Shah was Wednesday quizzed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) here in connection with the 2005 killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh but he feigned ignorance on many questions posed to him, sources said.

A three-member CBI team led by Superintendent Amitabh Thakur began questioning Shah at the Sabarmati jail in the morning but is said to have encountered a recalcitrant Shah, who was Gujarat's minister of state for home.

Violence will not solve problems, Abdullah tells people

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Wednesday said violence had not provided an answer to problems in the past nor would it do so in future and stressed that shutdowns the state has seen in the last month would only cause public inconvenience and hamper children's education.

"When effective democratic means are available to register protests and put one's viewpoint across, there is no reason for perpetrating violence and putting general public to hardships and difficulties," Abdullah said while addressing people in north Kashmir's Handwara town.

New Delhi: Elements in Pakistan with the support of the two factions of the separatist Hurriyat Conference were fomenting trouble in Jammu and Kashmir, Minister of State for Home Affairs Ajay Maken said Wednesday.

The minister told the Rajya Sabha that the government was "aware of anti-India elements based in Pakistan provoking the people of Kashmir with the support of certain sections of secessionist groups based in Kashmir on various pretexts to arouse the public sentiments".

No bail for NCHRO leader Adv NM Siddique; ‘Police conspiracy’, accuses NCHRO

Kochi: The Ernakulam Chief Judicial Magistrate Court yesterday rejected the bail plea submitted by Adv NM Siddique, Ernakulam district president of the NCHRO, and another human rights activist Abdussalam. The court took the decision reportedly considering the graveness of the case. Meanwhile, the NCHRO officials accused that the arrest and imprisonment of Adv Siddique and Abdussalam was part of a police conspiracy.

Ahmedabad : The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Wednesday questioned former Gujarat minister Amit Shah here in connection with the 2005 killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh in a staged shootout.

A three-member CBI team, led by Superintendent Amitabh Thakur, began quizzing Chief Minister Narendra Modi's close aide Shah in the high security Sabramati Jail, an official said.

The team was accompanied by two videographers, a lawyer and the jail superintendent in the Lokmanya Tilak Barracks of the jail where a special room has been prepared for questioning.

Restrictions in Kashmir to prevent separatist protests

Srinagar : Restrictions were again imposed in Srinagar and other towns in the Kashmir Valley Wednesday to prevent separatist sit-ins and protests, authorities said.

Separatist Hurriyat group leader Syed Ali Geelani has asked people to protest alleged human rights violations by the security forces in Kashmir.

"Areas in the old city and some parts of uptown Srinagar have been placed under restrictions to prevent violence by anti-social elements. Restrictions have also been imposed in Baramulla and Sopore towns in north Kashmir," a senior police officer said here.

Jamia Urdu: Save a dying institution

Jamia Urdu, Aligarh was established as a distance education institution way back in 1939 for imparting Urdu education. Perhaps it was the first such institution in India. All other institutions using distance learning system like IGNOU were established later on. As it imparts Urdu education, it will be appropriate to throw some light on status of Urdu in India and the desirability of its education.

Brinda Karat seeks justice for victims of Gujarat riots

New Delhi: In the backdrop of the arrest of former Gujarat minister Amit Shah, Communist Party of India-Marxist leader Brinda Karat Tuesday asked the central government to ensure protection and justice for the victims of the 2002 Gujarat riots.

"The centre should intervene in the case involving the Gujarat Chief Minister (Narendra Modi)," Karat said after releasing a report on the Gujarat genocide witnesses here.
