Gandhinagar, Aug 31 (IANS) A single judge bench of the Gujarat High Court Tuesday quashed the First Information Report (FIR) filed against senior IPS officer Kuldeep Sharma charging him with murder in a 26-year-old shootout case.

In a setback to the Narendra Modi government and the police, Justice R.H. Shukla ordered quashing of the FIR and rejected the state's plea of stay on the order.

Lucknow : The Uttar Pradesh government has sought 35,000 paramilitary personnel as part of its contingency planning ahead of the much-awaited verdict in the volatile 125-year-old Ramjanmbhoomi-Babri Masjid case.

A three-judge special bench of the Allahabad High Court, which concluded its hearing in the long pending case last month, will announce its verdict Sep 17.

New Delhi : Alleging that innocent citizens are being killed by the security forces in the Kashmir Valley, the Communist Party of India Marxist (CPI-M) Tuesday demanded a probe into the killings.

In a zero hour mention in the Rajya Sabha, CPI-M leader Brinda Karat blamed the central government for "negligence" towards the Kashmir issue.

"How many more children have to be killed? How long the governments in New Delhi and Kashmir are going to do this?," Karat asked.

"Stone pelting cannot be met with firing," she said.

Srinagar : With an 11-year-old boy being killed in police firing and another critically injured, tensions have spiralled in the Kashmir Valley prompting authorities Tuesday to impose curfew in this summer capital and other towns.

Irshad Ahmad Parray, 11, was killed when a huge mob of stone pelters attacked the Sherbagh police post in Anantnag town Monday evening after which security forces fired rubber bullets at the protesters.

With Parray's death, the number of people who have lost their lives in the ongoing unrest which started here June 11 has risen to 65.

It happened 18 years ago, when I was hardly 8. I still remember it as if it happened today. Afzal Mamu, a kind hearted man living in a nearby house, possessing a bright, peaceful and hopeful face, keeping always a small home-made purse with him in which he used to keep small tasty Kashmiri apples, sometimes Kashmiri nuts and pears to offer us.
Whenever it was holiday, my friends and I used to spend maximum hours of the day with him.

Thiruvananthapuram : Girls bagged the top ranks in the Madrasa public exams conducted by the Dakshin Kerala Islam Matha Vidyabhyasa Board in the state. Girls won the top three ranks in fifth and seventh standards whereas boys had to be content with just the first two in the tenth standard exams.

Jaipur : A group of concerned citizens has written to Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot demanding immediate suspension of DM and SP of Udaipur where 70 Muslim homes were burned during organized communal riot last month, and a probe into the incident by CBI.

In a letter to CM signed by Dr Asghar Ali Engineer, L.S. Hardenia, Prof Ram Puniyani and
Irfan Engineer, the noted intellectuals said they were shocked at the organized Sangh-instigated
violence against Muslims in Sarada village of Udaipur following killing of one Mohan Meena by
a Muslim youth.
