Court puts curbs on Gujarat cop's arrest Posted: 16 Aug 2010 09:29 AM PDT Gandhinagar, Aug 16 (IANS) The Gujarat High Court Monday restrained the state police from arresting an additional director general of police (ADGP) in connection with a 26-year-old suspected staged shootout. Justice R.H. Shukla ordered the state police's Criminal Investigation Department (CID) not to arrest ADGP Kuldip Sharma till a hearing Aug 20. Sharma, a 1976-batch Indian Police Service officer, is posted as the managing director of the Gujarat Sheep and Wool Development Corporation since November 2009. |
Gujarat riots: Plea to cancel bail of accused admitted Posted: 16 Aug 2010 09:21 AM PDT By IANS, Gandhinagar: The Gujarat High Court Monday admitted a plea for cancelling the bail granted to Babu Bajrangi, a prime accused in the Naroda Patiya massacre during the 2002 Gujarat communal riots that followed the Godhra train carnage. Bajrangi has been out on bail for almost eight years. The state government moved the plea following an investigation by the Supreme Court-appointed special investigation team (SIT), which is probing the 2002 riot cases, pointed to Bajrangi's involvement. |

"Curfew has been imposed in Srinagar city, Sopore and Bandipora towns to prevent any violence at these places. Restrictions imposed in other towns like Baramulla, Anantnag, Pulwama and Handwara would be reviewed during the day," a senior police officer said. Bablu Sheikh, the blind beggar who stole the show in the flag-hoisting ceremony organised by the Beharampore youth club, was overjoyed. The 16-year-old earns his daily bread by begging on the streets of Beharampore, 200 kms from Kolkata. "It feels great. I am very happy with this honor. This independence day will always remain a memorable day of my life," he said. |
