Kolkata: They treat each other as enemy when elections come, be it national or local. But one point on which the political parties have unwritten silent agreement is: not to give Muslims tickets proportionate to their population. Fewer candidates from the community which is one-fourth of West Bengal population have been able to get tickets for the municipal elections to be held in the state on May 30.

Bangalore: Popular Front of India chief has urged the Karnataka Police to stop harassing members of minority community for one reason or other and to curb "the communal fascist outfits like Sri Ram Sene that pose the real threat to communal harmony and law and order in the state."

PFI chairman E. M. Abdul Rahiman urged the Karnataka Police to put a full stop to harassing its members in the name of investigating cases in which they are not involved.

Nearly 3,000 cases on police gunfights filed with NHRC

New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has since its inception registered nearly 3,000 cases of police gun battles, some allegedly fake, until April this year, an official statement said.

"The NHRC has 2,956 cases in connection with police encounters (gun battles) in different parts of the country until April this year. These include 1,590 cases registered on the basis of intimation received from public authorities and 1,366 cases registered on complaints received from public alleging fake encounter by police," the statement said.

'Home ministry to take final call on Afzal Guru's plea'

New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit Friday said the final decision on parliament attack convict Afzal Guru's mercy petition rests with the central home ministry.

She said the Delhi government has made its position clear on the matter in the file, which was sent back to Lieutenant Governor Tejendra Khanna Wednesday. In its reply, the Delhi government has not opposed Guru's death sentence but expressed concerns of law and order if he is executed.

Gulf students outshine in CBSE class 12 exams

New Delhi: Students from the Gulf region have outperformed their India counterparts recording a pass percentage of 90.67 in the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) exams for class 12, the results for which were declared Friday.

The pass percentage of students in India was 79.87.

A total of 7,064 students appeared for the exams in March from 69 schools in various Gulf countries like the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain.

The overall pass percentage in the region recorded a marginal increase of 0.81 from last year.

BJP puts up hoardings in Delhi on Afzal Guru case

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has put up hoardings in several parts of the city asking the Delhi government the reasons behind withholding for nearly four years the file pertaining to parliament attack convict Afzal Guru's mercy petition.

The hoardings have been put up along major city roads.

"The Delhi BJP has put up the hoardings across the city to ask the chief minister why Afzal Guru's mercy petition file was kept on hold for almost four years. We want a reply from her as soon as possible," the party's city unit chief Vijendra Gupta told IANS.

Srinagar shuts down to commemorate separatist leader's death

Srinagar: Shops were closed as were business establishments as a shutdown called by Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, chief of the moderate Hurriyat group, to commemorate the 20th death anniversary of his father Mirwaiz Muhammad Farooq came into effect here Friday.

On this day in 1990, the senior separatist leader had been killed by unidentified assailants at his residence.
