N runs a small store in a town in the Jammu district. He has been an acquaintance of mine for several years now. Each time I travel from Jammu to Srinagar or Doda I make it a point to stop in his town and look him up. It is not that I am fond of him at all. To be frank, he repels me with his smug over-confidence, but I find his views interesting in a way. After all, he is an ardent supporter of the Jama'at-i Islami, and it is not often that one can befriend a hardcore Jama'ati.

SDPI wins 67 seats in Karnataka Panchayat elections

Mangalore: In its first big victory since formed last year, Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) has bagged 67 seats in the Karnataka Gram Panchayat elections held last week. The newly formed and recently recognized as a political party by Election Commission, SDPI had fielded 368 candidates.

CIMA, Preston College sign MoU for Islamic Finance course

Chennai: The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) today announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Preston International College to setup a study support centre that will offer the CIMA Certificate Courses in Islamic Finance and Business Accounting.

The CIMA Certificate in Islamic Finance is the first qualification offered by a professional accounting body to focus on the fast growing sector of Islamic finance. Preston will be the first college in India offering this four module course certified by CIMA.

ECI registers Social Democratic Party of India as political party

Bhopal: The Election Commission of India, (ECI), has registered the newly formed Social Democratic Party of India, (SDPI), as a political party under the 29A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.

According to a Press release the Election Commission vide letter dated April 30 has registered SDPI registered w.e.f. April 13 this year.

The national president of SDPI is E. Abubacker while vice president is Adv. Sajid Siddiqui. The national general secretaries are A. Sayeed and Umar Khan.

AMU Class X exam result out, Amina Haroon tops

Aligarh: The result of Secondary School Certificate (Class X) Annual Examination-2010 of the Aligarh Muslim University has been declared today. Amina Haroon of Girls High School secured First Position with 92% marks. This year AMU run schools have shown a substantial improvement in the pass percentage compared with the last year's.

While Amina Haroon of Girls High School has secured First Position, Zaki Anwar Naqvi and Umang Bhardwaj of S. T. High School secured Second and Third position with 91.80% and 90.80% marks respectively.

New Delhi: The infamous nexus between communal riots and elections in India is not news. In the recent past that the nexus did a naked dance was in Gujarat in 2002 and later. Bihar, also now ruled by BJP though partly, will face assembly elections in coming October, but much earlier have come communal riots. Several districts in Bihar witnessed communal violence this week.

Dental Surgery course at Jamia Millia draws huge rush

New Delhi: The Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) course at Jamia Millia Islamia has drawn a huge number of applications for the session starting 2010-11. For the 50 seats on offer by the Faculty of Dentistry, the University has received 4355 application forms.

The BDS course was started by the University in 2009 and this is the second year running for the BDS program in the University.

BDS is a 5-year-course and the admission to the course is made on the basis of merit determined by an Entrance Test. The Entrance Test is scheduled to be held on the 30thMay, 2010.

Man kills three children, then commits suicide

Lucknow : Unable to pay back loans to money lenders, a desperate daily wage labourer in Uttar Pradesh Wednesday killed his three children by giving them poison before committing suicide, police said.

Sagir, a resident of Lakhipura area in Meerut, about 400 km from Lucknow, had taken a loan for his wife's treatment. His children were aged between 10 and 14, police said.

West Bengal Madrasa results out, 76% success rate

Kolkata: West Bengal Board of Madrasa Education published the results of the exam 2010 of High Madrasa, Alim, Fazil and Kamil (Old Syllabus). The results were declared in Kolkata on May 18. WB Madrasa Board President and renowned writer Dr Sohrab Hossain declared the results. More than 500 Madrasas in West Bengal are controlled by WB Madrasa Board.

This year a total of 42200 students had taken part in the Examination. The average success rate this year is 75.90%. Pass percentage in High Madrasa is 76.62%, Alim (69.3%) and Fazil (81.8%).

Kolkata : Kiswar Jahan, the mother of Rizwanur Rahman who died under mysterious circumstances in 2007, Tuesday said she could hope for justice now that the Calcutta High Court has ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to register a murder case and probe the youth's death afresh.

"So far, we have not gained much. But the court order has given me peace of mind and heart. We have all along been saying that Riz was murdered," Jahan told reporters after the division bench of the high court gave its ruling on her petition.

Mecca Masjid blast third anniversary passes off

Hyderabad : The third anniversary of the bomb blast at historic Mecca Masjid here passed off peacefully amid tight security.

No untoward incident was reported from any part of the city, police said. The afternoon and evening prayers at the 17th century mosque passed off peacefully as police made elaborate security arrangements.

A tight vigil was maintained across the old city after unidentified gunmen killed a policeman last Friday. The motorcycle borne suspected terrorists shot dead the police constable at Shahali Banda, about a km from Mecca Masjid.
