PFI leaders arrested in Karnataka

Bangalore: The leaders of the Popular Front of India were arrested in Bangalore and Dakshin Kannada (DK) district without any warrant, said the press release of the organization. The press release signed by PFI Bangalore district president Mohammed Tahir says that the leaders were arrested from their residences at around 12 am on May 16. The organization has also decided to carry out peaceful protest measures if its leaders were not released in a dignified way'.

Ajmer bombing: Rajasthan cops pick up Madhya Pradesh industrialist

Bhopal : An industrialist from Madhya Pradesh's Dhar district has been picked up by the anti-terrorist squad (ATS) of Rajasthan Police in connection with the 2007 bombing at the Ajmer Dargah Sharif that killed three people, police said Sunday.

"The Rajasthan ATS probing the Ajmer bombing reached Dhar Saturday and after informing the local police took away local industrialist Rajesh Mishra from Pithampur," Dhar Additional Superintendent of Police Rajiv Mishra told IANS.

AMU off-campus: interim centre is satisfactory, says Kerala Education Minister

Malappuram: The interim centre selected near Perinthalmanna for beginning the AMU off-campus centre's classes this year is satisfactory, said Kerala Education Minister MA Baby after visiting the building for the purpose. However, the beginning of classes making use of the interim centre will be decided finally only tomorrow after the Higher Education Council held talks with the AMU VC Dr PK Abdul Azeez.

Kozhikode: Several organizations demanded strict action against Pramod Muthalik and the Sri Ram Sene following the expose of the latter through the sting operation conducted by the 'Tehelka' and the 'Headlines Today'. Doubts have also been raised whether the communal riots in the country were organized and conducted. The videos broadcast on Thursday night had exposed Pramod Muthalik as receiving money to organize riots.

Togadia files complaint against Tanvir, Zakia Jafri

Gandhinagar : Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Pravin Togadia Saturday filed a complaint charging Tanvir and Zakia Jafri, the son and widow respectively of slain former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri, with trying to create communal hatred in the state.

Togadia, who came in person to the Ellisbridge police station to file the complaint, told reporters that he had been summoned by the Supreme Court appointed Special Investigation Team(SIT) May 10 on the basis of a false complaint by Zakia.

Identity, Indian politics and caste census

The Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has assured the parliament that caste will be included in the current census. This was after Yadav leaders and OBC members of Parliament raised the issue and there was heated debate. The question arises why is it or is not necessary to include caste in counting people of India. Apart from caste even religion has not been included which also raises doubts in the minds of minorities. Maulana Madani, a Muslim leader and Rajya Sabha member has threatened to launch an agitation if column of religion is not included in the census form.

Government policies for minorities answer to fatwas: Khurshid

New Delhi : The government's policy of opening more banks in areas dominated by the minorities was an effective "condemnation" of fatwas warning Muslims against going to banks or taking out life insurance policies, Minister of State for Minority Affairs Salman Khurshid said Saturday.

"My greatest condemnation of such things is through the figures (of the success of schemes for minorities). Why should I stop my creative work and get into a condemnation exercise?" Khurshid asked while speaking to reporters at an interaction about his ministry's functioning.

Muslim clerics condemn scholar's arrest

New Delhi : Muslim leaders Saturday condemned the arrest of an Islamic scholar after a scare on a London-bound flight when a woman passenger complained to the flight crew about his "dangerous conversation".

Maulana Noor-ul-Huda, who runs Farooqiya Madrasa in Deoband, was on his way to London to deliver lectures when he was arrested after the woman's complaint. He was presented in a city court Friday and granted bail.
