CBI seeks custody of two arrested Gujarat cops

Gandhinagar : The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Friday sought custody of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) N.K.Amin and inspector V. Rathod, both of whom are already in jail in connection with the Sohrabuddin Sheikh killing case.

When the plea came up in the special CBI court, Rathod sought time to engage a lawyer and the matter was posted for May 12.

‘The WAQF (Amendment) bill, 2010’ passed by the Lok Sabha

New Delhi: 'The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2010', seeking to strengthen and improve the management and administration of the Waqfs in India, which was introduced in the Lok Sabha on 27th April, 2010, has been considered and passed unanimously by the Lok Sabha today.

Highlights of the Bill are as follows:

1. For reducing the scope of alienation of waqf properties by prohibiting the sale and gift of waqf properties;

2. Stringent penal provisions to prevent encroachments and to streamline the process of removal of encroachments;

Kashmir topper reaches home to hero's welcome

Srinagar : Shah Faesal, the first Kashmiri to top the prestigious civil services examination, arrived here Friday to a hero's welcome from family, friends and well-wishers and declared that he had decided to join the IAS when his father was killed by gunmen.

"I had decided that very moment that I will not allow my father's tragic death at the hands of gunmen to break my will," said Faesal, for whom village drummers had come all the way from north Kashmir's Sogam village to greet him in traditional style.

Headscarf row: School management suspends principal

Alappuzha (Kerala) : The principal of a Christian-run school was suspended by the school management after controversy when a Muslim girl student was issued a transfer certificate because she insisted on wearing a headscarf to school, an official said Friday.

Alappuzha District Collector P.Venugopal, who initiated talks between the school management, the girl's parents and other locals, told IANS that the issue has been settled.

"The school management accepted their wrong-doing. The principal, Mary Jessinda, has been suspended and an inquiry ordered," Venugopal said.

Ahmedabad: In a shocking revelation, Gujarat CID(crime) has now revealed that Tulsiram Prajapati, the lone eyewitness in Sohrabuddin fake encounter case, was killed in a planned manner and with his hands tied on his back.

This fact came to light during interrogation of three head constables- Karan Sisodia, Kiran Chauhan and Kanji Kutchi-arrested by CID(crime) last night.

Civil Services exam topper reaches Srinagar

New Delhi : Shah Faesal, the first Kashmiri ever to top the Civil Services Examination, reached Srinagar Thursday to be with his family.

Besides family members, local people in large numbers and media contingents were waiting for him at the airport.

Faesal attained the first rank in the Civil Services Examination, 2009, and has expressed the desire to join the Indian Administrative Service (IAS).

Lucknow : Stating that Islam condemns terrorism in all forms, leading Islamic scholars and clerics Friday welcomed the death sentence for Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Amir Kasab, the lone surviving gunman captured during the November 2008 Mumbai attack.

Both Shia and Sunni scholars expressed their vehement condemnation of Kasab's role in the 60-hour mayhem unleashed by him and nine other Pakistani terrorists that killed 166 people Nov 26-28, 2008.

Four Kashmiris crack the civil service code this year

Srinagar : The spotlight is on Shah Faesal, a doctor from Kashmir who topped the civil services examination 2010, but for the first time this year there are three other Kashmiris who have also made it to the elite bureaucratic list.

Rayees Ahmad Ganai, a resident of south Kashmir's Anantnag district, Showkat Ahmad Parray from north Kashmir's Baramulla district and Umair from Srinagar are the other three selected this year.

According to Ganai, the civil services exams were not as tough as perceived to be.

Omar joins Kashmiris to congratulate Shah Faesal

Srinagar : Shah Faesal had shown the way forward to Kashmiri students, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said Friday as congratulatory messages from political leaders, bureaucrats and others poured in for the Kashmiri doctor who had topped the Indian civil services exam.

"Faesal had shown the way forward to Kashmiri boys and girls," Abdullah said in a statement about the youth from Kupwara.

Faesal had proved that given a level playing field, Kashmiris could prove they are second to none in the country, the chief minister added.

Alappuzha: Wide spread protests have arisen in different parts of the state against the act of the school which ousted a Muslim girl in 10th standard for wearing the head-scarf. Meanwhile, the Central Board of Secondary Education has written to the Believers Church English Medium School, Alappuzha in Kerala to give its explanation on the issue. The Alappuzha District Collector has called for a meeting of both parties today. There also reports that complaints of similar incidents in other schools have been filed.

Brinda Karat demands fresh probe into Mecca Masjid blast

New Delhi : Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Brinda Karat Thursday demanded fresh probe into Mecca Masjid blast in the light of new evidence of links with the Ajmer Sharif blasts.

Raising the issue during the zero hour in the Rajya Sabha, she demanded compensation for 75 Muslim youth "arrested and tortured" after the blast in Hyderabad's Mecca Masjid in 2007.

Nine people were killed in the blast during Friday prayers in the 17th century mosque May 18, 2007. Five people were killed in the subsequent police firing on protestors outside the mosque.

Apex court bars verdicts, refuses stay on Gujarat riots cases

New Delhi : The Supreme Court Thursday restrained Gujarat trial courts hearing the post-Godhra riots cases from pronouncing their verdict, but refused to stay the proceedings on allegations of lapses.

It is "unlikely that the trial will be over shortly, but in case a trial gets over the verdict will not be pronounced," the court said in connection with social activist Teesta Seetalvad's allegations of faulty investigation into riots cases.
